Residents will follow their wallets. If you can go a few extra miles out of your way to save money, lots of people will. It doesn't take a genius to see that the sales tax will do little to nothing to curb the violence in Chicago. What it will do will drive business out of Chicago. Gotta love politicians who don't pay attention to weapon studies.

I believe people will stop buying where ever they have the tax. I also believe that the shops will have to move or close down. There is a tax proposed for each single round of ammo also.

Need to push the "leagle fees" (Owen sparks mentioned it) that the shootings pile up. After all, those public defenders and court cost, and the cost of prosecution...well they deserve that same $25 tax.

At first I too was mad at the proposed tax. It seems like the Cook County Board are a bunch of idiots. Each time they propose a new or higher tax, their tax revenue actually goes down, more and more residents of Cook County go to the other counties in Illinois to do their purchasing. (the city of Chicago has the same problem with residents going elsewheres)

Like most I too was unaware that I am already paying a federal excise tax on firearms of about 10% charged to the distributor.

As to Cabela's closing their Hoffman Estates store, I do not know, since most of their items are other than firearms and will not be effected by this new tax. Those that will be hurt by this tax will be the LGS like Lyons Guns, Shore Galleries, Illinois Gun Works and Maxom Shooter Supplies who's main business is the sale of firearms and supplies.

Even Gander Mt. is in DuPage County along with most of the LGS that are in Kane, McHenry, Will, Joliet and other surrounding counties not effected by Cook County taxes.

Without a doubt this is a stupid move by Cook County that needs more tax revenue to fight an ever increasing crime rate, but they are going about it totally wrong.

I cannot speak for most whether or not they already know about the federal tax, but this new tax is not in place of that one. It is on top of it. People complained that voter id laws were essentially a poll tax because the cost of getting one. Even if the state would provide one free of charge for those who cannot afford it they argued that they still needed to pay for the documents necessary to prove their identity.

This is nothing more than a tax in an attempt to deter people from exercising their rights and if they decide to exercise that right anyway then we are going to make them pay for it.
