MY New Model Vaquero broke and that just leaves me wit the BP Revolvers as my primary home defense guns! I never thought this would be the case but with the Vaquero broken, it's either the BP .44's, or a Single Six with the .22WMR cylinder, or my Cobra .38 Special
Frankilly I hope 911 works reliablly! Derringer for a House gun... Like usual a fully stoked Nylon-66 as a back-up!
Seriously, this is one of those dilemmia's you think overbut never think that you'd actually have to consider for real!
In my way of thinking, the trusty '58 Remingtonisn't a bad choice. I have both a full length bbl and a 5 1/2 Remmie to count on.
It's sort of funny it's 2011 and I am considering protecting house and wife with a century and a half revolver old design!!!
Think about it, a Cell Phone dialed up to 911 in one hand and a '58 remington in the other!

Black powder revolvers were the standard for self defense for many decades, and you should be served well, sir - just keep more than one loaded in case you need a New York reload. I hope you get your Ruger fixed soon - Ruger has an excellent reputation for customer service.

Dont worry one shot with the Remmy and they cant returnfire cause of the smoke screen you just laid down. This should allow you time to change locations. Besides no one in their rite mind would stick around for another of those kabooms.
You are quite safe.

Hell, they'll see the length of the barrel and the size of the hole in the end and just turn and hightail it out of there leaving a trail of yellow behind.... Dem thangs is FORMIDABLE lookin' :D

If it's a Colt Cobra, you're good.
If it's Cobra brand O/U derringer, I understand why you'd use the ,44 BP. As long as it fires reliably, which my Pietta 5.5 has, you're good.
.44 BP revolver, .22 mag revolver, .38 derringer, .22 SA rifle. I'd think you're OK.
The Nylon 66 is light enough to fire one handed, if need be.

I dunno? The Single Six loaded with WMR rounds will be so loud in an enclosed area that it will discourage any would be do-badder. That little pill they spit out ain't any slouch either.
The derringer would only come into play when it got down to the rock throwing.

Well, sounds to me like ZVP got that fever once again, and we all know there ain't no cure...

When ya start looking at ya BP over a 38 Colt there ain't but one solution, more smoke!!!

I don't think I'd be wanting to come break in and take ya widescreen knowing ya have either..

Just my 02.

I carried my NAA Black Widow in .22 mag tonight, Christmas eve service at the church. We went to eat afterwards. I feel better armed with it than with a .25 or .22 and as well armed as with any .32. But, I wouldn't really wanna run into an actual gun fight with it, not that I'd wanna do that with ANYthing, just that it wouldn't be my first choice. :D But, when one has to be discrete, it is that. :D

I'd rather have that Colt Cobra, myself. That's a fine defensive weapon right there. I have kept a .38 for house defense quite a lot, a snubby, too.

I have been in actual gun fights armed with an M16 but that was just to hold them off till I could get the 105mm and 155mms on target.

Bigger is always better in my book and I always prefer 8 inch if its available,

Maybe the absolute best of all,
be on the coast with 16" on call?

I have actually called in 16 inch from the New Jersey. You should hear them going overhead.

But 16 inchers don't come in an easily transported size and it takes 2400 guys to drive them around.

Loaded with 15 rounds of stingers or cci velociters I would think the nylon 66 would be an outstanding h/d weapon. Nothing wrong with the 1858 either.

Thanks for the suppoer and good wishes!
I think the Hammer spring or Transfer Bar is to blame? This is the SECOND major failure with the Vaquero within 900 rounds! The Factory replaced everything that moves under warranty but time is gone now so it's gonna cost ME! It just won't let the Hammer cock.
I sure hope this revolver isn't a lemon!
Yea the Cobra is a Derringer, good for super close range, Lots of oomph with a .38 Special though... the two Remmy 44's are a short Sheriff and a full length 8 inch. NO slouches in the power department! Lyman 200 Grain Conicals in front of 35 grains of Pyrodex, ignited by a Remington Cap! Yes, the Nylon-66 is a goodie, short, light and holds lotsa bullets!

ZVP, sounds like you have a transfer bar problem. Is your base pin all the way in, fully seated? The transfer bar won't work properly unless the base pin is seated.
