WOW, THR is back.
Went duck hunting yesterday morning. I'd hunted Saturday morning and we've had a front since then, decently strong front. It brought in some fresh birds, notably we have the green wings down now and the blue wings seem to be heading on down to Mexico. They've hung around last few seasons, but this year they seem to be migrating.
Anyway, I got out there early to get the spot I wanted, same spot I hunted Saturday. Now, Saturday was good, limited by 7:40AM, but yesterday morning was unreal! The flurries just after shooting time were epic. I couldn't see most of what I was shooting at due to the cloud cover and the fact that they'd fly up even with the tree line which was dark, so I was shooting where I thought they'd be a lot. I managed 4 in the water in the first fifteen minutes, then it settled down a bit and I finished out by 7:00AM. I sat there and called ducks in for the next 30 minutes before picking up. DANG, there's lots of birds down there! It was as good as the best I've ever seen it out there.
I tell ya, when duck hunting is this good, I loose interest in deer and hogs. I probably ain't gonna get a deer this year, again, because I've only sat on the stand one morning and one afternoon since it started. All I can think about is ducks! I lay in bed at night and see gadwalls cupping into my deeks. LOL I've got it bad again, duck fever. I mean, I'm in my, what, 42nd year of duck hunting I think? Man, it gets bad when the hunting is this good. I'll rely on the hog trap to keep the freezer full. I've got ducks to hunt!
From all reports, we have more birds coming, too. There's more birds up north yet to migrate. It's just friggin' epic! We've got a lot of rain today, though. I hope the river stays down. If it gets out again, the WMA will be shut down. That's the thing that could hurt the season, but the first split ends on the 29th, not even to the second split, yet, so there's plenty of time.
