I've Been Butchered

Good Lord. I just sent it to several more of the bigger papers. My head is spinning and I'm ready to beat someone senseless with a shoe. I'll be back after lunch (it's almost dinner time). I just wanna be free, that's all. I need medication.

As was the case over 200 years ago, the 2nd Amendment IS homeland security. The armed, law abiding citizen is our first line of defense. The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is as important today as it was then, if not more so, but talking facts to gun control zealots is only likely to make them angry. Much of what they claim simply will not stand up under scrutiny. Currently, New Jersey is one of the few states where it's virtually impossible to obtain a concealed carry permit.
The 2nd Amendment isn't really about guns - it's about our inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Many who don't even own a gun understand this and completely support the Constitution of the United States of America.
America was founded on the principles of individual rights, personal responsibility, accountability and self reliance. Many of us, though, look to government for solutions to our problems. Fortunately, we have the greatest system of government that I know of, but we've gotten a bit off track. We can only enjoy true freedom by accepting responsibility for our own safety, education, food, shelter, health care, retirement, etc.
Gun control is nothing more than a massive propoganda machine devised to gain votes, power and corruption. Clear evidence and common sense show that areas allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons experience a decreasing crime rate while tightened gun laws have a direct effect on a rise in violent crime.
Most of us in New Jersey just don't know the facts and are conditioned to believe that our politicians are actually solving the crime and violence problem when the reverse is true. Ask anyone in England today about their total gun ban and they'll speak of violent crime that has gone unimaginably out of control.
The uninformed don't take the time to understand that a person with a clean record, FBI background check, training and a legally obtained permit is highly unlikely to commit a crime. The "civilized" elite who run our state know what's best for us and that we can't be trusted to behave responsibly. A state that deprives its law abiding citizens the means to defend themselves is itself a barbaric accomplice to violent crime.
It's almost as if the people of New Jersey have an obligation to be raped and murdered for the good of society. Our leaders will sacrifice the innocent and impose their superior wisdom and virtue on others to further their own selfish agenda (which includes creating an environment of dependency that swings the door wide open for all manner of abusive and self serving spending).
Handgun ownership doubled in the late 20th Century while the murder rate went down. Guns are inanimate tools. They contain no independent power to cause results apart from our decisions, character and purpose. Certainly, certain measures such as thorough background checks are welcomed by all and New Jersey leads the nation. But excessive restrictions and irrational gun phobia transcend gun control into a larger area of concern.

The hate mail has begun. One bubble butt just replied to me saying something to the effect that she would never allow her child to play with mine to avoid the possibility of them finding my gun (well, it'd really be guns, rifles and shotguns) and playing cowboys and indians. As it turns out I'd have a tough time finding my "gun" since it's locked in the safe out of easy access of me.
I've noticed a definite trend that I was wondering if universal (not based on scientific evidence): I've noticed that those who are "anti's" generally have kids who are completely out of control and those who support Constitutional Rights have very nice, well bahaved kids. Anyone else notice this?

Well, I guess they thought it was too long for a letter to the editor. I'm sure you expected them to try to cut it down in size to (man, if I ever wrote one they'd really have to take the knife to my writing). However, I do think it is interesting that they took out many of your main points and most effective arguements.

And I'll bet the farm that the bubble butt and all of those like her can find their same genetic code in the fingernail marks imbedded in the concrete walls of the gas chambers of WWII Germany. Insensitive - yes, but I left out my really politically incorrect statements of which I have at least 2. Who knows, maybe I'd get elected to public office if I announced them.

Appears that your letter was too long. IMO, the editing job was a good one for the purpose of condensing it. However the editor added something you may or may not agree with, and that's not within an editor's prerogative.

You said:
The "civilized" elite who run our state know what's best for us
But that was edited to:
But the "civilized" liberal elite who run our state know what's best for us.
You didn't the word "liberal", which makes me wonder if the editor is more positively inclined toward your POV than the newspaper is. :neener:

Suggestion... When writing a "letter to the editor," sit down and count the words in a few published letters. Then try to make your letter the same approximate average length, definitely not exceeding the length of the longest. It'll be more likely to be published without bobbitage.

Another suggestion: concentrate on just one clear, concise point, and try to keep your letter under 250 words.

Of course, I've done so and they've edited it anyway.:banghead:

Yes, they probably have a maximum length. I wrote one to my local paper a couple of months ago. As I followed their guidelines it was printed completely. And yes the nutcases came out of the woodwork. I liked the one that said if we allowed people to carry concealed weapons, "Blood would flow in the streets". I guess they didn't know that TN is a shall issue state, and that there are over 150,000 permit holders in the state.

Not to belabor the issue, but this was my 16th so I delusionally thought that they might accept a novel. At this point it seems like those who don't "get it" are destined to be sheeple forever. Probably the only hope is to pitty them and be glad that we "get it". The only path might be that of compassion which may bring about understanding to the fence-sitter which may, over time, create a different political climate to restore core American values.
I'd rather not move, but it's always a thought and maybe a good one. In the mean time I'll continue my extensive reading of gun control and American history books to maybe uncover that gem that'll cultivate a concept that'll grab people by the neck yanking their heads out of the sand.
I think that I now understand the seeming NRA's non-interest in New Jersey and maybe now's the most important time of all to support them.

Ankle, welcome to the Patriots world!

"bubble butt" is typical of the group that believes that you can make "excuses" for bad behavior. If you have kids start them young teaching responsibility for their behaviors. Obviously BB doesn't and when her kid winds up in prison she will blame it on some vast "right wing conspiricy". I agree with the other posters, you're fighting an uphill battle in Jersey so keep the message simple. These people "feel" and have no rational thought. You cannot win by arguing. No matter how many facts you present their "feelings" trump all arguments. State the facts and let the comments roll off your back. Hopefully you may make a few folks think. This one is a lost cause. You may want to check out JPFO for an interesting take on the "feeling" folks. Yes, you're right, she could wind up in an oven and probably spies on her neighbors on a regular basis.:banghead:

Yes!

Basis for it is simple self-responsibility, not necessarily pro vs. anti.

Those that let their demon spawn from hell terrorize those around them are also of the mindset that it’s someone else’s problem to deal with things. They do not hold themselves accountable or responsible for ANYTHING in their lives.

Problem is if you so much as open your mouth to address the chaos that their screaming brat-monster(s) are creating, YOU become the one oppressing THEIR rights.

Sorry for the mini-rant/hijack. It’s one of my HUGE pet-peeves when parents don’t correct/mange their brats.

And some fan mail from a local lawyer:
"...NJ is a bit behind the times with such requirements considering its colonial background..."
"...your mind is a much more dangerous foe to the wicked in this world."
Maybe he anticipates me as a future potential client, but maybe more understand the deal than I give NJ credit for.
I promise to not post anymore to this thread. My name is not Nancy. And stand back, I've got a knife (actually 8 of them).
