And dammit, I want to. I don't really want 5.56. I don't like the round very much, and I think there's just too damn many. I kind of want to do one in 5.45x39. I don't know a hell of a lot about AR's, so I come to you guys with my question... Who makes a decently-priced 5.45 upper, and will I need anything different for the lower?

You can get a S&W upper here for $650. You can use regular AR-15 magazines with the 5.45x39, but when you do, mag capacity is reduced by a few rounds.

Alternately, you can get an entire 5.56 S&W M&P Sport for $600.

What's the advantage of getting the 5.45 over the 5.56?

I think spikes tactical makes them. Usnure about the lower.
