I inherited this Iver Johnson revolver from my grandpa, and would like to find out some more information about it. I am not certain on the caliber, but I think it may be 38 S&W. Any opinions if this would be safe to fire? Serial number on the bottom of the trigger guard is 50684. Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Looks Like a Second Model Saftey Automatic, the saftey refers to the saftey bar type hammer system and the automatic refers to the ejection system which automatically ejects the spent brass when the barell is tipped open.

The grips show the Owl looking down so it post dates the 1st Model which is strictly a blackpowder gun, where the owl would be looking into the back of the cylinder The locking system should have 2 lugs at the top above the hammer, if it is a second model.

The serial # should be under the grips, but be careful on removing them as the old hard rubber can be brittle.

Google American Firearms, a UK sight which has more data and can probably give you a date based on the serial #.

Be sure to have the old gun checked out by a competent gunsmith before you decide to shot it. The CAS SASS guys are snapping up the old top break pocket pistols for use in side matches.

I have a 1st model and have recently been able to have some fun shooting it with blackpower cartridges that I reload.

They are neat old guns with lots of history, hope you enjoy yours!

Anyone have any ideas for an OWB holster for this pistol? After doing a search, it doesn't look like there is anything current manufacture, at least not on Midways or any of the usual sites.
