Hey, what tips, (if any) do you guys have reguarding IWB holsters for heavy set guys?? Im new to handguns, and havent even gotten my CCW permit yet, but Im doing my research and trying to find the most comfortable position/placement for an IWB style holster, as well as a good functioning/quality piece.. I live in FL. where it's usually hot, so the clothing will usually be very casual with shorts and a t-shirt.. So comfort against the skin is important.. One hand re-holster is also important.. Lets hear some thoughts! Thanks for your info and opinions!! :)

I use a Galco Summer Comfort , I'm in Colorado so I can pretty much always get away W/ an undershirt between me and the gun. I lived in Fla for several years and due to the humidity I would recomend at least a "wife beater" between you and the gun. YMMV

Treo nailed that one on the head... I carry my 1911 in a Galco Royal Guard (Basically the same thing as a Summer Comfort). I live near New Orleans so I know that heat is a major player when deciding on a carry rig. I always wear a wife beater under my shirt to keep a layer between the gun and me. It keeps the gun from getting sweaty and keeps my hip from getting chewed up. Checkered grips aren't that abrasive on your hands but try rubbing them on your bare hip for a couple of hours.

I weigh 250 lbs and have carried either a Ruger P90 or P97 in a Milt Sparks VM2HS holster for several years, and it works good for me. :)

That really depends on the degree of your... rotundocity.

Do you have dunlap (your belly dun lapped over your belt) only in the front, or on the sides and rear as well? If it's mostly in the front, a normal IWB holster with a reinforced mouth should be fine, if you wear it behind the hip.

First things first, get a good gunbelt. It should be stiff enough to hold up the gun without having to cinch it uncomfortably tight and push out a roll over the belt.

hehe.. I'm lucky, I've only dunlaped over the front. (so far) :D I saw a pic somewhere of a similar shaped beerbelly with an IWB, at about the 4oclock position.. Looked pretty comfy.. Thanks for the info fellas, and TNP I'll be checking out your site! ;)

A wife beater is definetly the way to go in Florida. I carried a 1911 in both a Galco Royal Guard as well as a Galco NSA. Of the two I'd say go with the NSA or a similiar styled (Sam Andrew's McDaniel II comes to mind) holster that has the loop on a skirt. This always seemed more comfortable to me, as it didnt' dig in as much as the RG.

IWB Carry

I'm with you on the heat - Texas...

I normally carry IWB in SOB. I have a GALCO ultra deep holster for my Glock 23, but really prefer the 3" 1911 in a Milt Sparks SSII, or the best IMO, the Versa Max II. Just about invisible and stays put. I ALWAYS wear an undershirt - as a fellow big guy, this is not an option - year 'round.

If you have a 3" 1911, it fits nicely into a Desantis Nemesis holster, which fits perfectly into the back pocket of 5.11 pants, or in a pocket of many cargo pants/shorts with minimal, if any, printing...

I'm 320, and I use a Beltster with a RIA Compact 1911. Works great for me, may not be for everyone. Gotta grind the rivits off your jeans though.

i wear a crossbreed supertuck at about 4 o'clock. bear build here and don't have too much of a problem concealing a xd9 service. my usual attire is a polo shirt and my friends (who know I carry) don't notice it. under a light t-shirt I print a little though, but I'm in VA and don't worry too much about that

Vm2 @ 3:30

I'm 230 lbs and carry a 1911 with a Milt Sparks VM2 and a good belt.

Get a good holster, but don't forget the belt, and put it behind your hip bone. I've just gone through a hot Philly summer with a camp shirt for cover.

6'2" 285 Govt model or CCO model 1911 or a 2.5" S&W mdl 19 in Sparks VMII and a real good dedicated gun belt.
