I have a J. C. Higgins Model 583.14 Bolt Action 16-gauge shotgun. It was sold by Sears and Roebuck, made in 1948. Here's my question: This gun is great. It fires the 16-gauge, which I love, it's accurate, and it's bolt action... a pretty good conversation piece.

The problem is Sears issued a recall on this shotgun. They want the bolt returned, and will give me $160. The only problem is that then the shotugn will not be functional anymore. They won't fix it, they just want the whole thing back. Is it worth it? I suppose with $160 and a little more I could go buy a nice Remington 870... but heck, this thing is pretty neat to have around.

Anyone know anything about this shotgun? Thoughts on the recall?

Thanks in advance.

If the gun has sentimental value and you want to keep it intact for that reason, I'd pass on the $160. If you want to keep it and shot it, well.......

Otherwise I think returning the bolt and putting the money towards a new gun is a great idea.

The reason for the recall is as follows:

The bolt latch assembly may fail allowing it to dislodge and strike the operator in the face. This could result in injury such as broken facial bones or eye damage. Immediately stop using this shotgun!

Call 1+800+817-9165 for identification verification, instructions on the return procedure of the bolt of the shotgun and refund of $160.00 (Source: Sears, Roebuck and Co.)

The model numbers are 583.13 through 583.22

Yes, there has been a recall on the 12 ga. guns for several years. I personally have a 12 ga 583.58 Pump. The model numbers are 583.13 through 583.22. You can find info on where to call by typing in J.C. Higgins recall on a search engine. I believe it is 800 817-9165. I dont know if the recent merger has any effect on this rebate.

I have a 583.20 12 gauge. My father and I just got it out of the closest yesterday....doing my standard search on what this thing, I called the
1-800 number....They no longer have a $160 reimbursement. As of 12-01-05 they offer you a $50 Sears Gift card in exchange for the Bolt that you must mail off.

My father and I immediatly decided to keep the gun.

We did shoot it though......holy cow this thing kicks......
