Jacketed vs leads

Greetings,

2 questions:

- What is the rule of thumb with bullets and powder charge between jacketed and hard cast lead: Do you put more grains of powder with a hard cast lead?

- The famous xtp we see everywhere. Can I use that data as a jacketed?

My suggestion would be to buy a manual. They will explain it in there and give you the recomended powder charges.

As for the Hornady XTP question, I use jacketed bullet data for that one.

You need the book. XTPs are jacketed. Jacketed rounds can be pushed harder as a rule. Any cast bullet will cause leading if pushed to high velocity.
But the manual is a must.

I have the book.
I have the booooooook! (Speer #14)

I also have litterally hundreds of data pages printed from the web. I never do a load at least I have at least 3 sources confirming it and even then, I ask the question in a few boards to make sure.

I am often confused and often what is written is not clear for my simple brain.

So I ask questions. Some are clever, some are dumbs. :banghead:

The rule of thumb is to find data for the closest bullet you can, and start with the *minimum* charge for that bullet and work up until you get to the most accurate combination for your gun.

To answer your question, lead bullets will give higher velocity then jacketed bullets with the same powder charge due to less bore friction.

They also can sometimes handle slightly higher powder charges then jacketed bullets of the same weight, for the same reason.

You can't depend on it for converting loading data from one to the other type of bullet though.

also as stated always start off low very low with cast bullets. going to the max can also leed to serious leading of the barrel. you need to find the right combination. i usually start of 10% lower than the minimum amount for cast bullet when trying a new load.
