I have a 1895G in 45-70 that I am going to be reloading for. I have loaded 405 Gr Rem. sp in the past with good results but am about to try some cast performance 405 Gr gas checked bullets. I have found a wide swing in load data for lead vs jacketed bullets in this caliber. I understand that there are three different power levels and always stay within mine but most of the lead bullet data shows really low velocity. I've read that lead bullets can take a heavier charge than jacketed because of less barrel friction and I've read that they need to be loaded to a lower pressure because the bullets are softer. The Cast Performance are supposed to be pretty hard and are gas checked. I was hoping to achieve between 1800 and 2000 FPS but have found conflicting data. Can someone give me a little info or a link on this subject. If nothing else answer this question. If I got 1800 FPS out of a particular charge with a 405 jacketed, would this go up or down with 405 lead bullet?

In general, a cast bullet of the same weight will always produce lower peak pressure with a given charge than a jacketed bullet. If you are using a good gas checked bullet, it can be safely loaded using jacketed reloading data as long as the bullet occupies the same amount of the case volume. In other words, keep the seating depth the same.

If you have developed a jacketed bullet load you like, a cast bullet of the same weight and seating depth will generate more velocity due to the reduced friction.

You may have considered some issues already . . .

You may have feeding difficulties with many Lead bullet designs in the Marlin. Before loading a lot of them, load one dummy round and make sure they cycle. As always with tube magazine fed firearms, make sure you have a big flat on the nose to prevent primer ignition in the magazine.

The bullets I went with are the same bullets Buffalo Bore uses and should feed.(I hope) I did some adjusting on my particular gun to solve the carrier not lifting properly that many of the 1895's have. I think it will feed anything that is short enough now.

Got my bullets in today. No load data. Anyone else have any information????

I shoot 45-70 405 gr Cast W/ GC. What powder do you need data for?
If I got 1800 FPS out of a particular charge with a 405 jacketed, would this go up or down with 405 lead bullet?
It should go up a bit depending. Less friction of the cast boolit is supposed to give a little better velocity than a jacketed bullet.
