I just put together a model 50 that seems to be in near mint condition.what puzzles me is it still has the high standard barrel on it,and it appears there was never any iron sights on it.I can't find any record of a plain barrel as an option.has anyone ever seen one ?

Early 50s had the rear sight dovetail on the rear of the barrel with the sight mounted "backwards" over the barrel. Yours may be one of them with the sight dovetail covered by the scope mount.

there don't seem to be anything on the front or rear that would indicate any sights were on it ?

How about some pictures of the barrel, including any markings? It should be marked similar to this one:

mine is the same markings except it' 583-94 and it's a .270. it's the FN mauser action made in Belgium .

a couple more pics. it seems the barrel is still full length with a good crown.i'm puzzled ?

I don't know why you would find a 50 year old JCH without iron sights as shown in old catalogs; but what does it matter? You have transmogrified the rifle with a thumbhole stock and big scope. Iron sights would not be much use to you.

The roll mark on the .270 looks to be shallower than the one on the .30-06. Perhaps due to polishing after the iron sights were removed and the slots/holes filled prior to rebluing?

that could be it,I've searched every site and can't find a pic of a plain barrel.

Model 50

I had one on 3006 for 50 years and what a great shooter it was. I gave it to my son in law who now hunts with it. Superbly accurate and smooth action too. Being 70+ I don't hunt so I pasted it on so he could enjoy it.

I looked at mine and mystery solved. The later 50s used a base for the rear sight mount. It was soldered on. Yours has been removed and the barrel repolished and reblued.
