I have a JC Higgins Model 50 in a 270 win. Does anyone here have any idea what the value of said rifle would be. Its in pretty good shape, there is a few spot on the barrel that could use some bluing and some dents and scraches on the stock. Nothing that a rifle that has been used for so many years wouldn't normally have. I did a search here but it keep telling me not enough words to complete search ( I did expand my search and still nothing). So can anybody give an idea of what I have. Thanks in advance for all your help.

J.C. Higgins Model 50 is an F.N. Mauser action with a High Standard barrel. High Standard may have made the stock but I figure more likely they got it from Bishop or Fajen who were tooled up for bolt action stocks.

There is one on Gunbroker.com bid up to $300 so far.
In 1957 it would have cost $94.50 when a Remington 721A was $91.20 and a Winchester Model 70 was $124.95

I have read somewhere that the barrels used for the model 50 where crome lined. Is that true? And how would one find out if it where cromed lined. Thank again.

High Standard chrome plated the barrel bores on these centerfire rifles.

High Standard manufactured the stocks. They had a complete woodworking department and at the time this rifle was made they were making stocks for bolt action rifles, bolt action shotguns, pump shotguns and the .22 rifles they were making for Sears.

Good to know.

I do not know why the custom gunsmiths or their prospective customers are not grabbing up JC Higgins and Marlin bolt actions. They are not expensive, but they are built on FN Mauser, Husqvarna, and Sako actions which are all very desirable for fancy rifles.

I saw one as you describe in a pawn shop last week for $400. It's condition was close to your description, perhaps a tad rougher than yours, but close. It was at pawn shop that seems to generally have fairer prices than some shops on most guns that I am failure with, so there is a good chance $400 isn't bad for this area, perhaps more for yours. Good looking rifle I thought.
