Just got off the phone with the Gunsite office, checking out the rumors about the Colonel's condition posted elsewhere. As some know, he is now 86, has a bad back, is wheelchair bound and frail--and still mentally sharp. He was in the local hospital scheduled for surgery and had a "minor" heart attack prior to the surgery. He came through that ok but has an irregular heartbeat. He is now home and "resting comfortably", and "stable". ...He is still with us.

Cards and letters can be sent to Gunsite Academy, 2900 W. Gunsite Rd., Paulden, AZ 86334-4301 and e-mails to [email protected]; the office staff will walk them across to the house.

Agree or disagree, we all owe this man a lot--particularly anyone who paid attention to his writings and went into harm's way in the last couple of decades. Even if the source was not always credited, it was pretty clear where the ideas came from.

We're all just passing through. My opinion only, but it might be a good idea to say thanks while we can.

And perhaps a prayer, too.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like a card is, indeed, in order. I have corresponded with the Col. a couple of years ago. We have never met, but he was prompt and curteous in his personal reply. I don't suppose he is in any condition to respond to all the well wishers, but it won't hurt to add one more to the pile.

Keep the updates coming.
Spent a week with him in '99 - never been around anyone with so much knowledge and presence. At the time he wanted to hunt water buffalo, specifically during their return to the watering hole - he deemed that the most dangerous game ... and many present quietly figured he thought that was his last chance to go out in action.
Need to get a card to him. Thanks for the address.
Good to know he's mentally still there. Hope he pulls thru, understand if he doesn't, he'll want to be mentally there to accept when the time comes.

Latest update from the ScoutRifles list:
Update on Jeff Cooper, 14 Sep 2006

Several months ago Jeff suffered three new fractures of his vertebrae. This
has caused him severe and constant pain and he has been unable to do
anything but concentrate on pain relief - this is why there have been no
Commentaries since Vol. 14, No. 4, April/May, 2006.

The doctors suggested kyphoplasty, a procedure to separate the spine at the
fracture sites and relieve the pain - unfortunately, this does not normally
work on old fractures, or it would have been done a long time ago.

Jeff went into the hospital with the goal of getting prepped for having this
procedure done, but the doctors pronounced that he is not strong enough to
have it done. As it stands now, Jeff has a partially collapsed lung and has
been on oxygen for several months, and additionally his heart is now showing
signs of distress.

On Wednesday 13 Sept, Jeff came home from the hospital and hospice care has
been arranged to assist Janelle and the family with Jeff's care. While Jeff
is alert and in good spirits it is likely he will will not be out of bed
much in the future. Right now everyones' focus is on keeping him as
comfortable as possible.

While phone calls are not a good idea, cards and short letters for both Jeff
and Janelle would be greatly appreciated. The family has asked that flowers
not be sent.

You can send cards and letters to them at

I'm going to Gunsite the first week of Oct. I ws hoping to meet the man, but...

I've been reading his stuff since I was a little kid, and blame him for my becoming a curmudgeon prematurely.

Any mention of "Hospice" is not good. The end is approaching. Hospice will make his remaining 'days' as comfortable as possible; however long that may be.

Col. Cooper, my thoughts, and prayers, are with you, and your family.

Warmest Regards To Col. and Mrs. Cooper

My thoughts and prayers are sent to Col. Cooper and his family. I guess my most prize possesion is my copy of the Colonel's book: "To Ride, Shoot Straight, And Speak The Truth". I periodically will pick it up and devour it from cover to cover as if it was the first reading back in 1990. I do miss his monthly commentaries, but I have the first volume of the "Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip" to always refer to. I am looking for an in-expensive copy of "Another Country" and "C-Stories". If anybody on this message board has read these books I would love to hear a personal review. Rest easy Col. Cooper and get well!

I occasionaly go back and read his "Archived" commentaries. It's amazing how well they hold up. I'm praying I will get a NEW one from him soon.

I haven't read a guns and ammo for at least a year because I haven't learned much of anything from them between the internet, books, small arms review and my already huge stack of G&A from the past 10 years or so. The only thing I really enjoyed reading in guns and ammo was coopers corner. Even if I disagreed with a lot of his ideas, he taught me a lot. It saddens me to here of his condition.

This was the man, more than any other, that I'd hoped to meet one day during both of our time on this planet. I wish him a recovery, but if his time is coming, may he go in peace.

It is unlikely that Col. Cooper will go in peace. He is a true warrior that will not go gently into that good night.

He will be up and around soon.

Pain and some small fracture's are not going to keep him down. I am sure he will recover fine. Keep up the good thoughts, send some e-mail and cards.

HQ:)

Best regards and best wishes for a recovery to Colonel Cooper. Fortunately he has strong family around him, and he hasn't been consigned to waste away in one of those "sunset" homes.

Thanks for posting news and the address.

Just joined THR and found out about the Col's condition. I've been a fan of his writings for decades and my thoughts and prayers are with him.

Thanks for posting about Col. Cooper's condition. I will get a card right out to the address at Gunsite. May God bless him and his family.

Jeff died peacefully at home this afternoon

At the request of the family it is my sad duty to report the passing of our founder, Jeff Cooper. Jeff died peacefully at home this afternoon while being cared for by his wife Janelle and daughter Lindy.

There will be a private internment at Gunsite by invitation, with a public memorial service at the Whittington Center at a date to be announced.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

DVC,

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen
