Jiminy crickets, there are a lot of elk, mulies, and coyotes in SW Colo

Just got back from ski trip to Wolf Creek - flew in to Durango & stayed in Pagosa. I saw the biggest herd of elk I've ever seen, and more mulies by the side of the road at night in one excursion than the # of whitetails I see in an entire season of hunting here. Don't know where they get all their food, since the foothills are semi-desert, with lots of cedars and scrub brush, but apparently there's nutrients in them thar mountains. Coyotes out the ying-yang, too. Paradise is not far away; I have GOT to move! :)

Coloradoans, how much is are out-of-state mulie tags & license, for bucks and does?
 
Out of state deer license is $329.
Google "Colo Div of Wildlife" for the website. Figuring out the application is like learning Chinese algebra. Better hurry, the limited license application deadline is April 7th.
 
As we all know seeing lots of game anywhere,out of season,doesn't anyways translate to seeing lots of LEGAL animals in a LEGAL hunting area in season.
 
yeah but the moose that eat my shrubs all summer do me no good when I go somewhere I can actually hunt. Stupid Municipal anti hunting laws:cuss:
 
They bunch up here in the winter pretty bad. Most of the lower valleys will have pretty big herds, the deer don't bunch as bad as the elk.
When season comes there is plenty of room for them to get lost in.
I heard once that Colorado would be bigger than Texas if it was flatened out.
 
You think that's a lot, there's even more in the north part of the state up around Craig. Yeah. Um. They all head north in the summer and fall. Um.. Up north is the best spot for out of state hunters to go. Yeah. ;)
 
You wanna see elk, go take a sleigh or wagon ride through the Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming some winter! My God, I've never seen so many elk, I think they said the herd was 10,000 strong the time I was there, saw some GORGEOUS bulls in there.

BTW, I saw exactly zero identifiable bulls in this giant herd. But I guess by now they have dropped their antlers, so you cannot tell, correct?

Really? Is that for gun, ML, or archery? You don't draw in to hunt cows?
 
The out of state cost is regardless of hunt type, but it is different for bull ($549) or cow ($254). There are usually few leftover cow tags. Most leftover are unlimited bull. All non-resident deer on the other hand are $329.

Oh, I couldn't tell ya. I'm not a hunter or elk expert. When I was in Jackson, it was the dead of winter and cold as hell. Probably 12-13 years ago. I was working in itty-bitty unheated telecom equpiment shacks all over the area, out of a minivan, in God-only-knows-how-much-snow.

I just remember how awesome the sight was of all those elk, and I just had to buy myself a sleigh ride out through the herd. It was incredible! Incredibly cold too.
 
I was just joking with my wife today (as we passed the second huge herd of elk) that a comedian would have a field day about the difficulty of hunting down here. We have to stop for deer in our driveway, had bear walking up the sidewalks, and see elk from the highway...how tough could it be (from a comedic point of view).

We visited a friend who had bagged a HUGE elk this year...twenty minutes after the season started. They were kind enough to share some steaks with us.

So come on out...the area's friendly, LOTS of great food in town, and as you're hearing, lots of great hunting.
 
There be wildlife out west. I thought seeing a few deer in central PA, some bears on Savage west of Cumberland or perhaps a moose up northeast in Vermont was good.

But out west depending on the season, I see in one sweep a legal herd (If ONLY I HAD A PERMIT!!!! :cuss:) than I ever see or will see back east in my entire life time.

Nebraska I think is a hot spot as well, particularly down in the small valleys, the greener/water'er' they are the more wildlife is in them there hills.

Tempting to tote the 870 up yonder and see how the black brenneke magnum bear slugs do on those big game.
