The GREAT State of TEXAS

Where guns are outlawed you can be assured the outlaws have them!

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

As John Steinbeck once said:

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a .45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a .46.'

6. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

7. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.'

8. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

But wait, there's more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, Of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of some one evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

I'm a firm believer of the 2nd Amendment!

"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him." -G. K. Chesterton

Oh Really?

Texan, are you able to furnish citations, or is this another one of those nefarious screeds that pollute the web?

Probably more web pollution as you say...received from a buddy fighting over in the sand box. Just found it interesting...didn't verify any of it.

Guess I posted as more thought provoking ...

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

I have noticed and made note of that FACT. A lion share of the defensive shooting I have read here involves an elderly man. I don't know if it is too old to fight and I do not think it is fear or rage either. I am almost fifty and I feel changes in my attitude. Kind of a combination of not giving a damn with less willingness to putting up with crap. Is it when the clock is in the final quarter do you feel less to lose? I wonder.

The first time I read that quote I got a chuckle from it. Then I realized the truth behind it. We old farts have experienced a lot, both good and bad. Maybe it's a matter of deciding it's not worth the pain that will be clearly involved in a confrontation, along with the knowledge that you're most certainly physically outclassed by a younger belligerent. I think of the scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when Indiana Jones is confronted by a large, grinning, sword-wielding assassin - Jones shrugs, pulls out his gun, and shoots the blighter. Saves time and energy. :D

My Marine buddy over in the sandbox just sent me another and NO I haven't verified any of it:

"When someone asks me why I carry a gun, I reply:

* Because it is my right.
* For self defense.
* Why aren’t you carrying?
* Because when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.
* Do you see a cop close enough by to save your life in the next 5 seconds?
* Because a cop won’t fit in my waistband.
* Because a cop is too heavy.
* Do you wear a seatbelt/strap your kids into a car seat?
* Do you have health or life insurance?
* Because I can’t throw a rock at over 1200 feet per second.
* Doesn’t do me much good at home.
* To protect myself.
* I’m taking responsibility for the safety of myself, my family, and my friends.
* I’m educated and I know the risks.
* Because yelling 'help' usually doesn’t help.
* My sidearm is $500 dollars. My wife is priceless.
* If something bad starts to happen you won’t try and save my life."

Well, if you go around telling people that an important person said something when they really didn't, you run the risk of either seriously embarrassing yourself when you meet someone who knows more about the subject or being accused of fabricating evidence to support your cause.

That's not to say that Steinbeck did or did not say these things, just words of warning.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

I think Randy Cain lays claim to the above quote.

Steinbeck lived in pre-Castro Cuba, why would he care about 2nd Amendment rights? I also doubt he had a fire extinguisher in his house.

I seriously doubt Steinbeck wrote any of those, especially since most of them have been lifted from chain emails that have been circulating the web for over ten years.
