I've not been an AR-15 guy, but this past Winter I decided I wanted to own one before the politicians took them away from us. The problem was that everyone else wanted an AR too, and they became as rare as hen's teeth, and as costly as gold.

Since I couldn't find an actual AR, for a reasonable price, I decided to assemble one from components bought on auction sites. In this video I'll show you the result, built on a New Frontier polymer lower and a Palmetto State Armory upper.

I installed a Timney Trigger, and a Colt safety lever into the lower. I put on a set of Diamond Head flip up sights and a four power scope and took it to the range for a little plinking.

Black powder will always be my number one love, but I shoot everything.

For years my main semi-auto has been a modified CETME in 7.62 NATO, and I have pistol caliber semi-auto carbines in 9mm and .45 ACP, as well as my all time favorite self-loader, the M1 Carbine.

Guns of the Not-So-Old West

Congrats Mike -- it's inevitable that brown wood and browner steel people eventually shoot AR's if not the other way 'round.

And I've seen you review modern arms before.

NOW where are you writing, mostly!?

Hi Matt,

My main gig is with Guns of the Old West, I'm still the contributing editor there for black powder. I also do several feature articles a year for Combat Handguns and for Rifle Firepower magazines. And here and there in Harris pubs annuals.

cool... curious what you think after you've got several hundred rounds through it

You're part of the reason I couldn't find a new barrel for mine!!!

:D

Welcome to the club. Looks like you've built a good one. It probably won't be your last. They have a bad tendency to multiply. Worse than rabbits.

Welcome to the Evil Black Rifle club. You did well on the build. I like PSA's uppers, and the MI rail you have on there is very nice. I've owned a similar AR with the same PSA upper, but I used an ATI polymer lower.

congrats and happy shooting.

I swore that I'd never own one. Then, you get your first. After that, your second and third come along and you start putting more and more together and start helping friends and have a separate toolbox full of AR tools ...It gets to be addicting!

Congratulations!

I've always been the poor boy looking through the hole in the fence when it comes to ARs, but your post and video got me to thinkin'. I've always been a die-hard black powder/steel and walnut kind of guy, so I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to get up to speed on ARs. I'm talking the BASICS. Is there an "ARs for Dummies" kind of book or resource? I'm very much mechanically inclined, just behind the times.

Also, can I put one of these together without having to sell the family car?

Thanks for the inspiration, Mike! (Though I'm not sure my wife shares my sentiments. :))

Sleazyrider, it is a great time to get into the AR game. Check out AR15.com and M4carbine.net for build info. I've never used PSA, but they have some really good deals and have a good overall reputation.

I'd also recommend Recoil magazine online. It has a pretty good how-to on assembling an AR. Plainly written with plenty of pics.

And welcome to the wide, wild world of the AR.

I came over to the dark side too after many years of fighting the M-16 hangover. Glad I did and it looks like you are too.
