I have a few questions and the internet has not been much help. I have seen references to some of the carbines in .52 rimfire but were all of them chambered for metallic cartridges? Does anyone have any good pictures of the carbine with the loading gate open and either a cartridge being loaded or the powder and slug being loaded? I originally thought they were black powder breech loaders, like the Ferguson rifle. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The term rimfire is only used with fully contained metallic cartridges.

I can't say I have ever heard of the .52 rimfire, but in the earliest days of repeating arms, rimfires were quite common until centerfires took over.

The first lever action rifle to get any real success was the Henry, using a .44 rimfire. Another big name in lever actions, although you had to manually cock the hammer each time was the Spencer, which used rimfire cartridges, from .50 all the way to .56

I am not delving into my books at the moment, but I know that at least 2 other breechloading carbines in the US UnCivil War, used the Spencer cartridges, at least at the end of the war. Just not sure if the Joslyn was one of them.

The Blackpowder forum is the place to ask.

Good pictures, oneshooter

The ones I had looked at did not have pictures of the breech block in that detail. It looks like that carbine fired metallic cartridges. I'm going to keep digging a little more.
