After a long wait, I recieved my 1851 Navy in .44 from Cabelas (I heard they had good customer service and they didnt disappoint). I neglected to get the starter kit they offered, however, so now I need to buy all of the stuff I need. Does anyone have a list of things I'll need to get started, the minimum preferably. I plan to amass a collection of little gadgets, but lets just start with what would be needed for a first-timer.
By the way, except for the slightly uncomfortable grip, the gun points and feels very nicely. I can see why Wild Bill stayed with one even into the days of self contained cartridges (though he was using a .36).

Starting Out

Well, although it might be obvious - and not in any particular order -
Powder, Powder measure, Balls, Caps, Nipple wrench, cleaning rod & brushes, pipe cleaners ( for nipples ), lube ( bore butter ), wads, screwdriver(s) soap ( for washing gun ) and something to wash it in ( I use an old plastic babybath ), safety glasses / goggles, windex (range cleaning & pulling through), pull through, oil, WD40, cloths for wiping down between cylinders.

For later - mutton tallow, beeswax, preserving parafine, crisco, olive oil, card, punch, nipple pick, felt, cigarette papers, rubbing alcohol, dowel rod with leather tip, tweezers, cotton buds, Read the posts on here - all will be revealed!!

I am sure someone will tell me I have missed something but you wiull soon put your own kit together. MOST IMPORTANT - read up on as much as you can HERE. I found it THE BEST place to learn when I started shooting BP and it never bores me when I log on.

Good luck with your new toy and one more point, try and set up a place where you can work and fettle without being told to "clean up" or "take that and the smell OUT of here". If you get into good habits now they will serve you well in the future. Oh yes, and make sure you can get at the beer easily!!!

Cheers
Duncan
