number of responses from our readership. Overwhelmingly,
the emails agreed with our stance that compromise is not
an effective tactic.

Said one email, "The NRA called me the other day asking
for a donation to stop the gun-grabbers. I told them to
call me back when they're no longer among them. "

Another reader responded, "Continuing to support the NRA
because they are supposedly the biggest 'advocate' of gun
rights is like supporting Hitler because he was supposedly
a great environmentalist."

Why is it that all these other gun groups seem to be more concerned about what the NRA is doing, rather than worrying about what they should be doing? I for one, am sick and tired of hearing others slam the NRA. They are by far the most successful, longest running advocate for gun rights in America. Other groups should concern themselves with what they are doing and keep their nose out of the NRA's business.

As a leader of Ohio's most successful/active "gun group", we really don't feel compelled to sit around slamming other groups. We keep very busy being focused on what we are doing, and really don't have time to be concerned about what others are doing. Maybe JPFO should take a chapter out of our book! It's not been JPFO sitting in the chairs next to us in the Statehouse, but those chairs have certainly been filled by our NRA-ILA liaison.

Sorry. Rant over, but I just don't think I can endure one more thread slamming the NRA!

i agree with linda. i am generally supportive of JPFO and GOA's no-compromise stances, but i draw the line at fighting with the NRA like that. I can understand how they feel like the NRA is pulling a zumbo, and I know that can raise emotions when you feel betrayed, but still... an email just quoting random idiots ranting about the NRA is hardly productive.

Linda is so right. I have been active in the Pro-Gun war going back to the spring of 1958. I am an NRA Endowment member and NRA Certified Inst. Over the years there have been many pro=gun rights groups come and go. But it has going back to 1968 the NRA who has been out front leading the charge. The NRA tried to stay out of the politics, being a leader in shooting sports. But with leaders like LBJ going after our guns they became more active in politics as well.
It has been my observation that these splinter groups are big on selling memberships. But "Down where the Rubber meets the road" they are always no shows. The NRA is the only group that shows up at local and National fights and take the heat from from the press. Please join and support the NRA.

I once thought the same about the attacks on the NRA.

However, two things changed my stance on that in a big way. The first was the NRA endorsement of Joe Schwarz, an long time anti-2a state senator (Called CPL holders bubba who strapped on a 9mm) turned congressman. Schwarz was challenged in a primary by Tim Walberg who is a very good guy and is pro-2a. Schwarz was endorsed by the NRA. GOA and SAFR (disclaimer, I'm on their PAC) endorsed Walberg.

The other thing was their active hostility (till recently) of the Parker v DC case.


I'm not a fan of the NRA right now.

You can please some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time. The NRA has a proven track record in the past 60 + years that I've known them which allows all of us to own guns, talk guns and carry/use guns freely. Without their constant watchful eye in Congress, our rights would be only read about in history books. Naw, I don't agree with all their actions, and yeah, I get more than my share of pleas for money, but by God, as somebody else said, we all stand together or we all hang separately! I trust an organization with their beliefs.

Remember: Politicians and diapers should both be changed, for the same reason.

OK, so they endorsed one candidate that you didn't agree with. Heck, they endorsed a couple candidates in Ohio that we questioned as to why they did so. I'm pretty sure that we at Buckeye Firearms probably endorsed a candidate or two that not everyone agreed with. That's the world of politics. Welcome to it!

And well we're at it:
People say the NRA compromises too much. Well, until you've sat in your Statehouse next to your NRA-ILA rep, until you've testified in your Statehouse on behalf of gun rights (in the presense of your NRA-ILA rep), until you've spent countless hours a week, thousands of hours a year fighting for gun rights (along side your NRA-ILA rep), until your Senator and State Representative knows you on a first name basis and you REALLY see how the wheels of legislation churn, then NO ONE has the right to complain that the NRA compromises too much. (And where was our JPFO representative? Looked around. Didn't see one! Hmmm.,apparently they don't care about Ohio.) Getting legislation passed is clearly a give and take proposition! Again, welcome to the world of politics.

I will hang with my fellow patriots on here who support the NRA and have figured out how the real world of politics works. Thanks guys for your part on the fight for our 2nd Amendment Rights! Without US, those of them who complain about the NRA would have a whole lot more to complain about.

Somebody please remind me when was the last time that the NRA was pro-active rather then reactive? I've belonged since the early '70's and don't seem to remember any time since I joined. And responding to a threat is NOT being pro-active.

This is why I have no plans to join the JPFO. I like their stance on getting rid of the BATFE, but they spend too much time and energy bashing the NRA. The NRA isn't perfect, but it's the best we have. And, the more time and energy we spend fighting among ourselves, the less we can devote to fighting the antis.

Well, here in CA, the NRA is pro-active a lot of the time, if you mean legislatively.

At the Federal level, the bill banning lawsuits against gun manufacturers, simply for being gun manufacturers, was a pro-active NRA measure.

One could surf the threads here and other like forums and see a lot of individuals posting and slamming the NRA. When another organization, read not individual, posts an agreement or dissagreement counter to what is perceived to what the NRA is doing, all of the "NRA Friends" surface. I had to say perceived because, anymore, I don't know what they are doing. Now don't get me wrong, I support the NRA. I am and have been a life member since about 1973, and Endowment life member for the past 10 years. I have an automatic deduction from my checking account each month the NRA-ILA. I also give in between 300-500 dollars each year to the Friend of the NRA through CFC at work. In general, I like the NRA.

Ed, I think there's a huge difference between when an individual slams the NRA and when another gun group slams the NRA. I think that is everyones point here. It's very easy for the JPFO to sit back and criticize what the NRA does, but I'm curious....,just exactly what is it that the JPFO has done at the state level? Nothing that I'm aware of in Ohio.

I am very happy that you are supportive of the NRA though. That makes me feel much better about your post.

0007, the NRA was proactive in Ohio on June 13 when Castle Doctrine was introduced in both the House and the Senate. And they were very, very proactive on Dec. 12 (plus the year and a half leading up to) when we achieved the first Governor veto override in 30 years on HB347, our concealed carry fix it bill. Both the House and the Senate overwhelmingly overrode our lame duck Gov. Yes, the NRA did us quite well. Thank you for asking!

The NRA has made mistakes over the years. Who has not? Most recently in negotiating with Congress on the modifications to the NICs check they should have demanded repeal of the ten year old Lautenberg Amendment. They missed that opportunity. Do I wish they took a hard line like GOA. Yes.

Nevertheless with 5 million members the NRA has a lot of clout and has stopped a lot of bad legislation and certainly lets us know when something terrible in the works. The NRA certainly made us all aware of HR 1022, S1237 and the new proposded OSHA regulations on explosives.

I consider the NRA to have compromised far too much. Likewise I understand the point of view of many here that are defending them.
But you know what? If our arms ownership rights are hanging on this single thread called the NRA...well give it up. Right now they are treating the symptom rather than the problem. The real problem is more laws being created, all laws. Not just gun laws. Good grief, how did the human race survive to this point?

More and more burdens are poured out upon the common citizen. And as is the cycle in all societies, once more control and less freedom of it's peoples are garnered, unless this is reversed it generally ends in a destructive crescendo of economic and societal upheaval.

Yes, the NRA does compromise. I'm starting to think maybe a couple anti-2A folks have infiltrated its leadership, just based on actions. Also, I'm wondering how the NRA will use 12 million dollars to get 50 million pro-2A people to the election polls...

But more than that, I'm wondering what the GOA and JFPO are planning to do to get pro-2A people to the election polls, raise awareness of our 2'nd ammendmant rights, and draw support through grass roots efforts.

The 'non-compromise' crowd seems to talk a really good talk, but what the hell do they actually do? From what I understand JFPO has some really good video material for 2nd ammendmant education, but since it's not free or posted on the web who other than us will buy it and watch it? GOA does great to rate potential candidates, but did they create a 2nd GOA branch for political victory/what do they do to help fund them? Bashing the NRA doesn't do crap. I pay my dues to the NRA and GOA, but I want to see real action out of both.
