SEATTLE - A Judge has just ruled that the city of Seattle ban on guns on city property is illegal, effectively ending the ban.

The 2nd Amendment Foundation, the National Rifle Association, and several individuals, including a gay rights activist and a Department of Corrections worker sued the City of Seattle and former Mayor Greg Nickels in October. They demanded the city repeal a controversial ban on guns in places like parks and community centers.

The individual plaintiffs say they're suing not just on principal, but because they now "fear for their safety", according to their lawsuit.

King County Superior Court Judge Catherine Shaffer made the ruling today after the plaintiff’s filed a motion for Summary Judgment and prevailed.

Close friend of mine is one of the DOC-worker citizen plaintifs. (Great going Bob !)

Thank you, I will pass that on to him !

Since he works for DOC, several weeks ago I asked him for his impressions of the judge slated to hear the case. He said she is middle of the road and extremely fair to each side in the cases she hears, i.e. no agenda.

As a Seattle citizen who has received very unsatisfactory responses from Nickels by letter and on a call-in show - I am delighted to see his position officially discredited.

Now I can go about my business in public places (including protecting myself and my family) without the discomfort of having to ignore his silly signs.

Hurrah and thank you to all those who challenged this egregious usurpation of law and common sense.

Great news here. I never understood the mentality. How does a law banning guns in public parks keep a lunatic from shooting someone in the park? DO they think the lunatic goes there thinking "Man, I am gonna kill soo many people...oh damn, they don't allow guns in the park. Better go to Starbucks instead...."

I never understood the mentality.

I've had the opportunity to ask Nickels (and other like-minded people) what the point of these bans are...

I'm convinced they truly believe that even licensed and trained CPL holders are safer - as are "the children" - if we are unarmed.

THAT is the belief we have to overcome with common sense and decades of solid evidence to the contrary.

I never trust anyone who uses "the children" as an excuse. It always seems like they are hiding behind the young 'uns to avoid rebuttals.

You're right about that.

On the other hand - I would assert MY children and ALL children are safer when I and other responsible gun owners are armed. The presumption here is that all people of good will want to improve public safety "for the children". Unfortunately, there are many who believe - without examining the facts - that MORE guns makes us LESS safe. We - who HAVE examined the facts - know they are wrong.

It is in all of our interests to continue to rationally present those facts to anyone who will listen. Personally, I have my hands full with the antis in my own family. I have three brothers, one of whom is coming around. My wife and my daughter were initially opposed. My wife hasn't started shooting yet - but after much disagreement she has come around fully to accept and even encourage my carrying. My daughter has a long way to go - but she is allowing me to teach my 5-year-old grandson to shoot airsoft (he's a natural!). We were watching Jerry Miculek shoot 12 rounds in under six seconds blindfolded - and my grandson blurted out, "I love this guy!"

Small victories - one at a time - do add up.
