Jungle Carbine on the job

My brother recently went to Nairobi , Kenya on a business trip . While there he took a walking tour of the Nairobi Park Game reserve. He had lots of neat pics of animals but for some reason this was the one that caught my eye.
A good old No.1 Mk5 Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine still doing duty.

Other than being rather unpleasant to fire, the No. 5's are great little carbines.

He would be a ranger at the Nairobi Park, which is a small Game Park virtually on the outskirts of Nairobi & as such very acessible & popular for those with limited time to get a small taste of africa. He told my brother that he only gets to fire this rifle once or twice a year.

I used to own one that I foolishly traded away. I never found it "unpleasant to fire".
I think of it as one of the best combat bolt actions ever.

paintballdude. Kenya is actually one of the most non-violent eastern African countries there is and I doubt poachers would use a wildlife preserve for their hunting grounds.

They are more plesant to shoot if you replace the Jungle Carbine stock with a regular No. 4 butt stock.

Being as Nairobi park is very close to the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, I suspect to unromantic & more prosaic truth might be that the armed ranger is not so much for protection against charging or dangerous animals or poachers but rather common or garden crims/thugs call them what you like. The Park does have big cats as well as Black Rhino & Buffalo though so I'd be happy to have an armed guide along for whatever reason.

My sister live in Nairobi and the crime is not as bad there as the county she left from here.
although they still use the expression TIA, its usually not cause of the violence.
