I wish I knew how to upload a video where I could take a walk around the interior perimeter of the general store but here is a small taste, only able to upload a few pics of one wall that represents a small portion of the old rifles that are on display but not for sale.....

You'll see some Winchesters, Savages, Springfield, etc.....

If you're ever in Southern VT check out Singletons General store....

There are so many more that I wish I could post but it would take me the better part of the day to take photos of every rifle, but there sure are alot of interesting rifles. The sad thing is during hurricane Irene I went to the store and tons, litterally at least a half ton was loaded into a dump truck that all got rusted and water logged that were sent off for restoration, that came from the basement, there are hundreds of rifles that aren't even on display

Cool, looks like a great place to stop.

I will be in Alton, NH in a couple of weeks, but I have the wife and kidlets so my time will be limited. if we make a run westward I will try to detour through Proctorsville.

If I was solo I would be making the rounds of S&W. Ruger, SIG, etc for factory tours and maybe the Kittery Trading Post to see what’s in stock.

Stay safe.

Well if you find yourself with some extra time on your hands, get in touch and you can be my guest at the local range and I'll send you away with some pretty decent beef jerky from the store. If you're looking for ammo at a good price, you'd have to visit the Lavalleys building supply about a mile north, I can hit it with a rock from where I am, pretty good prices honestly..... but Alton, NH is a pretty good ways away.

eta: I considered taking an Electrician job at the Newport, NH factory, it's about 30 mins from me, my grandfather in law who passed recently put 30 years at Ruger, I wish I could remember what his code was, there was a 3 digit code that he had on the revolvers he finished. He took alot of pride in his work. You couldn't find somebody who thought more highly of and was more proud of Ruger.

Dibs on the stevens ..... a truly fantastic display. Thanks for the pics.
I'll try to update the thread with some more pics. I only posted a small portion of the store near the beer cooler, I'll try to get pics of the deli, clothing, ammo, guide gear, footwear, fishing tack and supplies, liquor, etc.... there is so much more....... I bought my first gun here, a Mossberg 500 for $175......... I spent 10 years working just over the train tracks from here and buying lunch here on a weekly basis........ sadly this was the local weigh station and I never did bring any game to weigh

Hey Dusty,
My wife and I are going to Vermont next week. I put the general store on the list of places to try to see. We'll be in Waterbury and Woodstock for several days each. Want to hit Burlington, Quechee, the Shelburne, and the Greenway bypass too. Is the Lavalley's you mention the one in Ludlow?

Yes, the Ludlow one. I just did some work in Woodstock and Pomfret, interesting lil town. Lots of lil storefronts, expensive area to live and shop. It's like a 40 min drive from me. I'm not sure of any gun shops in that area, but I'd have to think there is at least one. It's a pretty small town. Also, the Quechee Gorge is a must see, as is the Cavendish gorge (less than 10 mins from ludlow) but that one is a ways off the beaten path. Not a drive over gorge like Quechee.

I was in there the year before last because everybody around here tends to vacation in OOB or York, ME and I like to stop in on the rare occasion I take vacation. They had a real good selection of used guns, especially Rugers and Remingtons. My buddy lives near KTP and often sends me screenshots of their selection.

The only problem is, if you're one of the poor souls that gets a "Delay" their store policy is to wait until you're cleared before they will sell as opposed to proceed with sale after 3 days. My buddy wound up waiting 30 days at which point I guess they send it through again? Strange

From many years ago I remember a grocery store in the neighborhood that displayed many old shotguns much like in the photos. I don't remember the name of the store. Back then most neighborhood stores where named after the owner, not a chain. Like "Howard's Groceries ". I could just walk around the store looking at the guns. Not, paying attention to what I was putting in the basket.
These photos bring back old memories. The gun rack in the hardware store, department store and even the auto store.
I don't expect anyone to understand.
But, Back then. Things seemed to make sense. Today, Not so much.

The Corner Fruit Stand here had a similar but less grand display of old guns.
I helped write the auction catalog when they closed down and sold up.
One buyer got stiffed because the auctioneer left one word out of my description and he bid far too high. "Reproduction."

In my (kid years) hometown of Salina, Ks we had some stores very similar. Cleve's Marina (serious as heck, barrels and barrels of foreign milsurps / handguns and Gibson Market. except the Gibson's was owned by a huge int. hunter and NRA governing board member. Wall to wall Brownings (Belgian) / Safari equipment. (in Ks, lol) With Beechcraft and Wichita air industry so close "Deep DEEP pockets were always about. Kool things to remember.

@Bennj Also, if you happen to visit Proctorsville to check out Singletons, the real one, not the Quechee one :D, the neighboring town of Cavendish has that nice Gorge I mentioned earlier and right on the town green is the Phineas Gage monument, the site of the accident is spitting distance from the monument. I actually grew up in the house right across the street from the monument, lots of people stopped to ask directions to the monument, that and they always wanted directions to Alexander Solzhenitzyn's compound but my folks taught me to never give out directions and there was a sign at the general store that read "we dont give directions to Solzhenitzyns DON'T ASK!".

Rt 131 scenic is also an excellent stretch of road that goes about 10 miles along the Black River and is apparently world class fly fishing.

I kick myself because Singletons always had nice old out of production rifles and handguns, good stuff, for sale. Lots of Colt stuff, Winchester, Remington, etc... I wish I had better taste in firearms when I turned buying age because the hay day of Singletons is over. Every out of state tourist has to buy a T-Shirt. IMG_20230605_171113.jpg

I also think he may actually be selling some of the "Not for Sale" stuff because I've actually noticed some bare spots on the wall that were never there, I guess if you walked up with the proper motivation, the money talks.....

In the last picture, above the saddle ring carbine, there is what appears to be a Remington #5 sporting rifle. The long barrel, what looks to be a Schnabel tipped fore end and sights in the correct position are giveaways. . These rolling blocks were built on the smokeless 1902 action and were chambered in 30-30, .303 British, 30-40, 7.62X54 Russian and others. They never gained any popularity, because by 1905 the world was pretty much finished with single shot rifles. Only a handful were built, probably fewer than 200. They are extremely rare and valuable. Roy Marcot, widely accredited as one of the leading authorities on Remington firearms ( and old west guns in general ) told me that the #5 sporting rifle is one of the rarest and most desirable of all the Remington's.

If anyone visits the place, it might be worth it to ask the owners about that rifle.

I spent 8 years in B-boro. I rode my motorcycle past this store time after time and didn’t notice it. I miss Vermont a great deal and feel that I misspent my time there by not getting to know the little corners like this. They all whizzed by me a 50+ mph.
I didn’t always ride up the mountain road at Luella and walk up to the fire tower/chairlift towers. What a great view. The truth about Vermont having equivalent to the crumpled up surface area as Kansas seems believable when I think about how much I ever saw.
Ever get to Somerset Reservoir? Anywhere on the forest roads is a good place to start walking for grouse….

Funny, I've seen hundreds of Ruffed Grouse but today on my way home was the first time I stopped the truck on the back road to watch a grouse and somewhere between 10-14 Itty bitty tiny lil grouse "chicklets" attempt to cross. The grouse was being very protective, I put on my 4-ways and backed the work truck up about a hundred feet to let them all safely cross. Half of them had crossed when I came up on em but the rest got spooked and ran back the way they went. I waited about 10 mins while mama doubled back to scoot them along while I made sure other motorist didn't flatten em.. I hate to see baby critters get smashed, saw a tiny lil red fox get flattened last week, it was about the size of a gerbil........ But I always seem to have to stop to let Canadian geese cross safely, they're everywhere where I am. I mistakenly walked up on a nest while I was shooting one day and mama wanted to take me down, I backed up real quick even though I could have turned her inside out with a 12ga. Fricken geese will go right after you. You don't think of them as intimidating, but she acted like she could bounce me up and down the riverbank and leave me totaled and bruised 6 ways to sunday......

Yep, around here and I'm sure other small town USA places elsewhere they say the same thing but the towns are sometimes such low population that if you blink while you're going through cavendish, you'll miss proctorsville. People like the "Quaint" lil "Norman Rockwell" postcard towns, but they have an intangible, Victorian era quality that the yups from MA, NY, CT, NJ and RI love and will throw ridiculous money at. Getting 40+ acres and a 19th century farmhouse with a big "historic" barn with a covered bridge down the road for under $1M is an unbelievable deal to these people, and now they can all work from their laptops so instead of being seasonal guests, they are all mostly full time year round residents and it's affecting out politics and more germane to THR topics, they bring their anti gun views and anti gun voting habits with them. They just don't get it, the worst ghetto in VT doesn't see in a year the firearm related crime that the worst ghetto in Boston, MA sees in a week......... a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Living within 25 miles of a mountain resort makes it tough to be a local too, some 3 bedroom houses are fetching easily $5K/wk.

I moved back to the finger lakes right before they rammed through the magazine capacity laws and others. At least it’s still a constitutional carry state. I moved there to for a girl. I never owned property and couldn’t because of the “flatlanders” sucking up all the good stuff. I pretty much had to move away from any commerce to find a place I could afford. That girl and I didn’t work out so I was bouncing from room to room with housemates until I split.
Funny story: I began carrying when I lived there because I could. I started out small; a .22 short, a 32 SW, Athen a .38spl. I figured I never really needed it but whatever. Bratt was a peaceful place. I would go out to the local watering hole for dinner almost nightly since I was single guy and I’d meet friend out at the bars for drinks after. There was this one Saturday nights that, as I went to get out of my car, I decide not to take my weapon. I tossed it in the glove box and got to walking. I took about 10paces. Across the street, I saw three guys walking away from me. They were visibly “not from around hee-yuh” and one of them was shirtless with a giant freaking sword in his waistband. I spun around on the ball of my foot on my eleventh pace with so much conviction that there was probably a puff of smoke from the rubber on my shoe. I grabbed my weapon and went about my evening with no contact with the three ******-ka-teers.
The following day, I showed up for work and my lieutenant told me of a call involving a sword wound that night. It was the talk of the town. I knew the guy who they went after. He got the sword away from them and defended himself. No one died. Naturally, it was over drugs and money.
The lesson learned is an obvious one early in my days of ccw.

We all have to protect the wildlife until it’s time to harvest them. Even then,
discretion is key.

The list of things to see/do for our relaxing vacation is getting longer with each post. We have friends from NJ that have a place in Ludlow. They ski and are up there alot during the winter, but go up throughout the year (except during what they call mud season).

Yep, I actually remember that, hearing about it in the news. The guy had already had a few cases settled by reason of insanity, why he wasn't inpatient care is beyond me and just goes to show, even in peaceful VT you still need to have your head on a swivel and carrying a CCW isn't a bad idea. Guy not far from here got decapitated in the store plaza for not making good on a $40 drug debt. Even here.... but anyway
