Hi All,
I just bought a CMMG Mk4 .22 AR rifle. It seems nice in fit and finish, has a multi-cal all-metal lower, and a forward assist equipped action. I couldn't spot anything bad about it. I Apologize for the lack of pics - I pick it up tomorrow, and pics will follow. Two questions I have are:

1 - Do I have to modify anything, remove any parts, or add any parts in order to run black dog mags in it? I was thinking specifically the X-form BD mags.

2 - it doesn't come with any sights. It has a full picatinny rail for rear irons, but the picatinny rail on the front gas block is lower than the rear picatinny rail. Can you recommend any BUIS for the gun? Do you invest $250 in something such as Troy's/MI, or should I buy cheaper ones b/c it is a .22. What are your thoughts on AR BUIS's, whether it is centerfire or rimfire??

Please feel free to post pics of your .22 AR setups.

I have the CMMG .22lr pistol (soon to be an SPR) and it works fine with the Black Dog mags we bought for our SIG 522.

As to the sights, its a .22, no point spending a ton of money, IMHO. I put a Primary Arms red dot on mine with a Mag Pul flip up rear and a UTG flip up front on the front. They make them in two heights -- taller for the "gas block" shorter for a level rail.

Our SIG 522 wears a cheap "rubber coated" NcStar 3x9 it works very well.

The X-form mags are a new design introduced after we got our .22lr AR mags.

Congratulations, I assume it is the Quebec-A with the MKIV lower. This is the AR 22 I preach about. I own the Sig,S&W M&P 15-22 and the CMMG. The CMMG is by far the best in my opinion. It is the best built by my tastes. It is a full mil-spec lower. The barrel is twisted for the .22 which helps in accuracy over a conversion. I have 3k plus rounds through mine and I swear it shoots better and better each time. That being said you can use Black Dog magazines. Those are the ones I recommend. Make sure to get the metal feed lip. They are worth the couple dollars extra. You will laugh but mine now has a carry handle and quad rail on it. I had one laying around and it works great. Avoid Pro-Mags in this though. The crazy part is the S&W mags and the Sig mags both fit(S&W are really tight fitting though).

Thanks a lot Wally; I will look into the UTG sights. Before you said that, it appeared to be that if I wanted a gas block front sight, it would cost me some real cash - and it sounds like this is a cheaper alternative

Yep. I remember that CMMG had the quebec-a (as well as the india, etc) on their website in the past; however, they have been remodeling the site and the quebec-a is no longer on there.

Will do, CJohnson - metal feed lips it is. I saw them on www.44mag.com - they seem to have a great selection of BD mags. Please advise otherwise...Thanks.

Oh no, it probably looks great with a carry handle, especially since the barrel doesn't go out that much farther than the gas block...care to post a pic, might I ask..?..

Here's the pic. Just ordered some black dog mags and UTG leapers front/rear sights. Again thanks for all your help.

CMMG makes a fantastic lower, in fact they are producing the majority of lower receivers on allmost all brands of better AR-15s including Colt.

It looks like I've got the exact same upper, minus the forward assist adapter. Here's mine with a Burris 2-7x scope and the Rifleman score it shot awhile back:

I absolutely love the thing. It tends to go several thousand rounds between malfunctions, a big part of that could be that I sprung for the stainless bolt & barrel collar and I tend to clean and re-oil it between every range trip. I've got about 7,500 rounds on that upper and another 8,500 rounds on an older CMMG 22LR upper that has iron sights. They've made some improvements on their bolt and barrel collar since I got that first upper; it really only liked Federal but my newer upper with stainless bolt has liked everything I've fed it.

That first upper also broke the soldering that held the back on the receiver plate (the part with the rails that the bolt rides on) after only about 4,000 rounds. I eventually replaced the receiver plate, recoil spring, bolt, and barrel collar on that one. The newer upper has only needed a new firing spring in those 7,500 rounds. The good news is CMMG sells all these parts individually on their site; I was looking all over Sig's site but hadn't found replacement parts for their 522. Kinda scared me away from even thinking of buying one since I know I'd shoot the heck out it and probably break something before long.
