Just bought one today for 89.00 from big 5 in california. So i gotta wait 11 days ( state law says 10 big 5 says 11). any tips for me or advice. This is my first rifle. I plan on cleaning it right away. it had a little bit of sticky bolt syndrome so any advice how to stop that (gun shop guy told me to clip part of the spring and it will cure this, any truth of this or is it to risky) . also i remember seeing a trick to lighten the trigger pull anybody know how to do it, something about a bolt or nut in the reciever. I got some surplus rounds and some winchester soft points plan of using these for hunting hope they work great. any other advice you can think of would help. thanks a ton.

If you bought a Big 5 Mosin-Nagant, you probably bought an arsenal refurbished rifle; as such, you do not need to modify it by clipping the spring. Its already been brought up to arsenal standards.

Remember, it is a hardy military rifle. It was not built of cheap plastics and delicate aluminum. It is carbon steel. If the bolt sticks a bit, Be a Man!- slap it hard with the palm of your hand.

If it sticks after firing it, you may want to scrub the chamber well with an oversized brush, but don't go modifying it before doing your homework.

Other than not modifying it, I would suggest that you get a good, and long, one-piece cleaning rod, preferably a carbon fiber rod, and an assortment of cleaning jags and brushes. Clean it well when you get it home to remove the caked on cosmoline, and apply a light coat of gun oil.

Before firing it, make sure that no material, such as cleaning patches, have remained in the bore, then go have fun. When you are done, clean it thoroughly, taking care not to damage the crown.

Lastly, have fun.

yes, we all know what killing machines these 100 year old bolt action 5 shot rifles are. maybe you should wait 15 days. :scrutiny:

take the whole gun apart and clean out every tiny little bit of cosmoline ( thick yellow grease) this will probibly take care of some of the sticky bolt

imho

usually sticky bolt is caused by ammo.

my nagants do not stick at all with wolf gold x54r, like butter in fact... but will stick on every round of cz surplus silver tip.

just got an m39 today... perhaps that will be a diff story.

oh, and HEADSPACE YOUR GUN

(shame less plug: i can sell you a gage =) )

stripper clips

stripper clips which ones are good which ones suck? i heard the stell ones usually dont work and copper ones are much better? are the 20 clips for 9.99 on ebay a good deal or no.

dark,

Don't waste your money on strippers.

If you feel the urge to waste money in such a manner, send me 10 bucks, and I will send you all 20 of mine. Be warned, none of them work at all.

Congrats on your first rifle. The 91/30 was the first firearm I got and I love it. It's a great way to get introduced to owning and using firearms. If your bolt keeps sticking no matter how much you fire and clean it take it to a gunsmith to get polished. Thats what I had to do and he took out a big ball of rust.

Enjoy!

Check out Surplusrifle.com, they may have some articles on the Mosin. I've seen a step by step to lighten the trigger pull, and it's pretty easy. No clipping involved in anything, it just involves shimming the spring. Actually, Cosmoline may have posted it, he's one of the MN gurus.

As far as sticking bolt, there are many, many discussions on chucking a 12 GA brush in a power drill, dipping it in solvent, and cleaning the chamber. Do a search and loads of info will turn up.

Have fun.
