It's LNIB I want to get a nice set of grips for it. Would I need to buy square butt or round?

According to the Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson,
your S&W model 657 was made after Oct of 2000.
This would make it a round butt model. There's nothing
wrong with that picture; as it should be a tack driver!

Yes it is a round butt N frame, but it has a Hogue monogrip conversion grip. Makes the round butt look and feel like a square butt.

Here's a comparison of the 2 butt shapes.

Here's the standard round butt Hogue.

The square butt and conversion grips fill my hand better than the round butt. Just personal perference.

let us know how it shoots!

Hogue makes a variety of grips for them, at www.getgrip.com

The new Ahrends finger groove, such as what come on the 329PD, also feel pretty nice. Your 657 should have light enough recoil that it would be easy to shoot with wood grips. You can order them direct off S&W's website.

Herretts will custom make some for you, too:D

A bit on the heavy side, but a great shooter, nonethless.
I won't part with mine, not willingly.
.41 mag N-frames are where it's at...
Congrats.

Thanks guys I picked up a set of Cocobolo grips of of S&W website. I can't wait to shoot it. It will be a nice change from shooting 44mag and 357.

That's a solid cylinder- so it's not just a 657. Standard 657 is 6.5" barrel
You Smith nuts can probably tell which special run this particular gun is. I sure can't. There's the Hunter and ...it's over my head.

I think that is one lucky owner.

stavman- it would be worth it to me. I'd rather pay 500 for that than over 500 for a model 58.

Ala Dan- the solid cylinders are given another disignation- they must add something, a dash with a letter or number. and it is called something besides '657" What is that? There are never enough of them and everyone cries when they're gone.

Thanks,

munk

Thanks for info I've read some reviews of some 41 mags on here and they seem like real tack drivers. I hate the wait just ordered a little ammo a little bit ago, I'm stoked.

Stavman, I'm like my favorite late great gun writer in this- I have no prejudice at all except when it comes to the .41

I have three of them. And the one you got is highly desirable. It is not common. I was one of those who whined a lttle everytime a batch was released- I never had the money at the right time.

In 2001 S&W stopped making the 657 in 6" and started making it with the 7.5" full lug barrel with the non-fluted cylinder.

Some call it the 657 full lug. S&W calls it the 657 7-1/2" - Hogue Rubber Combat Revolver on their website.

There is no dash on the model number on the labels. It is a 657-4 as was the 6" from 1998-2001.

The 657-5 is the same gun with the integral lock. Product code 163946.

I did find that in the 2003 catalog S&W has it listed as the 657CH. CH for Classic Hunter. Neither of the labels on mine indicate this.

Thanks for that- I've been out of circulation for awhile.

I didn't know they'd gone solid cylinder- my apologies for misinformation.

This is old news to you guys- but I guess Smith figured only the hunters and loons were buying the 41, and we all really did like that solid cylinder.

count me in as one of the loons and hunters.

My 657 is my favorite revolver. I hope you reload. If you want to shoot it much you almost have to. The factory loads are pricey.
