I'm looking for sights for my new AR. It's a flat top and I'm just looking for some basic ironsights to put on it until I can scrape up the money for a decent set of irons or an optic. I heard magpul and troy are the way to go, but I'm open to any other suggestions

You should not put the Magpul sights on a railed gas block as they will melt if and when you get the rifle hot.

Polymer doesn't melt, it crystallizes. In lay terms: in the event it gets hot enough, it will distort, but not lose its form enough to fail in a high stress situation. If the gas block gets hot enough to do THAT to a MBUS, then the OP is in too much trouble to begin with.

Edit to add: what the Magpul package says, and what polymer is capable of are to very different things. I do not adhere to rules of thumb, but I also know that mileage varies. If high round count in a single sitting (and I use the word "high" quite firmly) is a norm, aluminum or steel will better serve...maybe.

says right there on the package not to put it on gas blocks

but we don't even know what sort of gas block/front sight post the OP has anyway

Thanks for the science lesson.

Back to my original point... Its a known problem, dont mount them on a gas block!

I don't see the sense in spending $100 or so on a temporary set of sights. $100 is $100 that could be put toward what you want.

The Magpul flip ups are OK for the money, but I wouldn't get them as my primary sights. They seem really flimsy to me. I don't know if they're made of the same stuff that their handguards are made of, but I've broken a couple of the handguards.

What sort of setup do you have? Do you have a front sight tower? Rail height gas block? Railed handguards? I might have something that I can loan you laying around. I think I have a Magpul rear sight in my parts box someplace. I used it for one day and didn't like it.

In any case, let us know a little more about your setup.

$40 for a truglow. Just seen an AR on guntalktv show. Had a scope but also off set of iron sets. Turn sideways a bit and u could use up close or as backups. Looked good too

I like the DPMS rear without the handle. If you setup the zero with the IBZO method the numbers will be pretty close. @ 540 yards I am at 5 +2 clicks, and they also allows for windage.

I don't, nor have seen any problem with it other than height issues. Like I said, continuous strings of fire will damage it, but range/hunting/HD use is a go. If your mag dumping alot, then yeah, it'll get trashed. That's the only cause I see.

if it's just to hold you over for a bit and get you to the range. check the for sale sections of various forums and pick the cheapest set that will work with your set-up. carry handles can be found for a song these days.

They survived a fall test better than some expensive metal sights.

A very important word in that sentence is "a." It was one very unscientific test or one exemplar of each and in the grand scale of things is not something I would put too much weight on.

I own MBUS sights btw.

Not being suited to to being mounted on a gas block is a known limitation of the MBUS. It will likely ruin them and as others have pointed out, Magpul tells you as much. Any sort of hard use will get the gas block hot enough to damage them.

You repeated me. "Hard" use, pretty sure I covered that. Still and all, if my block was of correct level, and Im not pretending to be GI Joe (hard use:rolleyes:) then IMO, MBUS would be MY choice. I don't shoot 30 rounders one after the other just to watch my wallet cry.

For $81+/- on Amazon, the OP can buy the excellent Bushnell trs-25, which works great and comes with a lifetime warranty. I'd recommend buying a short riser through Amazon, as well.

The so-called "debate" about mounting plastic on gas blocks is silly. I sometimes heat up my ARs pretty well, and I'm not going into combat. I did use a railed gas block on one of my builds, and I quickly discerned, with no instructions or lecturing from anyone, that it was stupid to mount anything plastic on a railed gas block.

The chances of my ever using one of my ARs in a s.d. situation are somewhere between infinitesimal and zero, but probably a lot closer to zero. I still wouldn't want to mount a piece of polymer on my gas block. And, yes, some polymers, of course, do melt.

I have TROY folding battle sights front and rear on both of my AR's. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for. I'm not knocking MagPul MBUS sights, I just think that "Iron Sights" should be made out of metal is all.

I own both Magpul MBUS and Troy Folding Battlesights. The Troy sights are VASTLY superior.

It's not the polymer of the MBUS sights that bothers me - it's the TERRIBLE sight picture they provide - especially the rear aperature. The chunky squarish aperature is no match for the clean ring of the Troy sights.

That said the Troys are exspensive (even though I got my set for $150 since they were on a display rifle). I'm sure there are other good options as well that can be had for less. The OP should brobably look at the options from YHM, Midwest Industries, and Daniel Defense as well.

Ive busted Magpul sights before. Didnt take a whole lot of effort either. However, they stood behind their product and sent me out a new set. Not sure if this helps, but there it is.
