Just called Joel Hefley's (R) office about the ban

I just got off the phone with a staffer in Representative Joel Hefley's office in DC. I called to find out what his stance was on renewing the ban. The staffer I talked to didn't know, but sounded sympathetic, especially when I pointed out that being charged with a felony for possessing a magazine was really, really dumb.
But he didn't know what Hefley's stance on the thing was, and said that he'd check with him and find out.

Calls and snail mail better than e-mail

Good for you for calling.

A few of my friends work for political types and the general rules they use to gauge public senitment is: A letter is worth more than a call and a call is worth more than an e-mail. The more time it takes to do something the more strongly they feel the citizen feels about the issue.

Whether they call you back or don't, the call made a mental mark in the staffers mind. They also look at the volume of mail they get pro or con on major issues.

I always toss a short one page letter in the mail about it with at least one factoid from our point of view for them to chew on. I have all their addresses set up in a letter format and just copy the address and update the date and message and out it goes.

The temptation to make the AWB even more egregious than it already is, could be their undoing. Schumer and Feinstein are going to try to get away with a major gun grab because the White House said they will sign an extension of the bill if it gets to the desk of the Prez.

My guess is what they try and push through will be so far beyond the original stupid bill that it won't even get out of Congress.

Write, call or as a last resort, e-mail your congress critters now to head these idiots off at the pass. Definitely ask for their point of view or position (but expect them to tell you they are "studying the issue")

That's what I've heard before. I'd already written a letter to Hefley several weeks ago, but never got a response. I decided that following up with a call was a good idea. I also sent another letter yesterday as well.

Document merge can save you a lot of time, as well as time fields. Most (if not all) word processing packages can handle that.
