Being a owner of a couple hundred shares of S & W, i think you should totally buy more Smith and Wesson's new. :p
Seriously, I'd go with the revolver. You can shoot .357 and .38 spl (much cheaper). Shooting a revolver does wonders for curing your flinching. (pull it 7 times), it will always be a classic and always be good part of your collection.

Go with the 686 (or other quality .357 revolver). I wanted an auto when I was shopping for my first a dozen years ago. Fell in love with the 686. Ended up getting a 6", but the 4" would have been better for typical use. Have had it along to finish deer. (Ended up getting lots of other guns as well.)

As to the shooting, are you referring to the WI deer hunting incident last year? If you have a scoped rifle, unless you're REALLY close, it would probably be better to stick with the rifle for defense. BTW, not all of us Asians are that dangerous. :)

You know, I don't understand why you would get a Mak in this case. I got no problems with Maks, and in fact, THR has basically convinced me to buy one, but in this particular instance, I can't see why you would buy one. Not as versatile as the 686 (or, as someone else said, any quality .357 revo), and no where near the power of either the .45 or the .357. It is substantially less expensive than either of the other two choices, but in this particular instance, thats the only advantage I see.

First

I am no expert ... but my first handgun was a Colt Gov't 1911. Now, while I do love the feel of the 1911, the price of ammo and the word love do not go together. So, I would go with the 686, shoot .38s, reload and have the ability to shoot the same rounds as your lever action. (I would have voted other, but you said .22 soon to come or later)

FYI, I am going to buy a .22, like I should have bought the first time. Five to six thousand rounds through a .22 could be gone in a few weeks, not over a year! More shooting = more fun! :D

I got to play around with a Taurus 627(tracker) in 357, and really think I'm gonna do something quite contrary. 300 bucks for the tracker, around 450 for the S&W. 150 is a holster, speed reloaders and alot've ammunition. I would like to own a nice S&W, but think I'll hold out for the 520pd or 329pd.

So until I get distracted by something else, Taurus Tracker 4" .357 magnum.

Having both a S&W .357 and a 1911,

I'd say get the 686. There was a time when I sold off all of my wheel guns. I ended up buying a Marlin 1894C due to me reloading .38/.357 and needed a gun to shoot reloads out of. Guess what? It wasn't long before I ended up getting another .357 S&W which was a 520. Now I have two of the best combos out there, a .357 revolver and a .357 lever gun. My revolver goes to the range alot more than my Kimber Custom II. With seven shots in the cylinder, I still find the revolver easier to clean than the 1911.

"Go with the 686. Pre lock if possible."

The man speaks the truth. Can't go wrong with this one--it can do just about anything that you might need a handgun to do.

Really up to you & the kind of shooter you are, but I'd go w/ the wheelgun (686). There is just so much you can learn from shooting a good revolver!

Since you are talking about self-defense, no real knowledge of rifles or h/guns, & thinking of a .22 to start out with. Then why not start with a Ruger MK-512 Bull bbl for there will be your gun to learn with & is a trusty semi-auto with inexpensive .22 rim fire ammo. Later you might aim for the S&W 686 & there is the ease of pulling the tigger for for each shot in double action with no racking the slide or having a semi-auto with a safety on you might forget to release when it comes to self-defense?

Did you even read my post? I've got plenty of guns, I've put thousands of rounds through my father's handguns and all I need is to decide between a revolver and a semi automatic. I'm not new, I'm not new. I own more than a few rifles and shotguns...
