My post is the second in this thread. I recently acquired an SPS-Varmint in .308 Win. I mounted one of my Zeiss Conquest scopes on it, took some Federal GMM in 168gr and some of my RL-15/SMK 168gr hand loads to the range and obtained 3-shot groups averaging 0.35" and my two best being a 0.19" and 0.22" off a Harris bipod/rear bag. The rifle had the original factory stock.
I've got two Rem700s in .308 Win with no mods, Zeiss Conquest scopes on Leupy STD bases and both are wonderful shooters. IMHO, If you have one that doesn't group well, look to technique and ammo first, scope/mounting second, trigger adjustment third and then look to changing the stock, either by modification or replacement, and finally, to barrel, action truing, etc. Note that this order of trouble-shooting is in order of increasing effort and expense.
Good luck,
FH
