I just finished the gun and the pics. I have a LOT of pics of it as I was playing with lighting and so on. Not that this gun needs this many pics, just a lot of a gun and me playing with the camera. Sorry for the number of them, but enjoy!! The grips were fun to do, not easy and they turned out well. I also replaced the blued MSH pin with a stainless one for a more seamless, blended look. I don't like bobtail grips that are drilled for the MSH pin, I think they look better without.

Bobtail and trigger work SC Commander

Just finished the bobtail and trigger work on this S&W Scandium commander. Customer wanted a smooth stainless MSH and I am happy with his choice. Looks very nice. Polished all of the trigger internals and with the sear and hammer work, now has a very nice lighter side of 4 lb trigger that is much crisper than the original. Pretty creepy before. I will be cutting the grips to match tomorrow, but thought you might like to see the skeleton. Enjoy.

I'm proud and grateful to say this is my pistol. Jess, the Gunsmith, wouldn't say it but he is a real gent to work with - courteous, considerate, thoughtful and has reasonable prices as well. The transactions on this gun echo the good things of our sport. He's a pretty good photographer as well. A classy guy.

deezulsmoke, I have a blued Sc with steel slide, can you refinish the slide so it does not rust? Nice work BTW.

Barrel crowning complete

I noticed that when I was looking this pistol over that the barrel crown seemed to be a bit rough from the factory. It had several significant "snags" that you could feel with your thumbnail running it across the crown. Since the pistol was already here and the owner was agreeable, I did a crown and polish on the barrel before it goes home. Here are a few more pics. Please excuse the fuzz and polishing/cleaning residue on the gun. I did not get it as clean as I would have like for the pics, but it has more of the used "lived in" look this way. This is one that I would not mind keeping myself. With the bobtail and weight of the Scandium frame and commander size, it makes for one tight little carry gun! I really need to work on the gallery for my website, but at least photobucket is a fast way to post for now.

Now that I has drowled on the keyboard, I'll send you an email with my idea for a two tone Sc. Looks like you got another customer. ;) Nice work.

This is my pistol and I'm ecstatic about it. I should have it back Tues. and I don't know whether to frame it or shoot it. The gunsmith, Jess Gypin at On Target Custom Gunworks, email www.ontargetcgw.com , is an absolute joy to work with and reasonably priced too. It is rare to find such a considerate, competant person these days. If any of you are thinking of getting some work done, you will definately NOT be disappointed in Jess.

Pistol should be there anytime. Tracking shows that it is out for delivery. I am just really wacthing the clock and UPS to know when it gets there! I am excited to see what your reaction will be when you get to see it in person.

I really appreciate all of the kind words. I have a couple of more coming in for bobtails and will also be posting more pics of them as I get them. I also have a custom 9X23 stainless commander that is been waiting in the wings. I have the slide work completed and the frame is here. All I am waiting on are the small parts and the barrel from Barsto. It will be a ramped Wilson/Nowlin barrel, stainless commander frame and slide from Caspian, 25 LPI hand cut checkering on the front strap and then bobtailed with hand checkering on the MSH to match. The slide sports Heinie Straight 8's, flat topped and arrow serrations, borders and the "Yo-Bo" rear sight cut that allows for the Heinie to seat deeper into the slide. All we are really waiting on is the barrel and it should be here in the next couple of weeks. No sneak previews for now.

I got the gun home yesterday late afternoon and it is as BOOOOOtiful as the pictures show. WOW!!!! I have a Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail which, at first glance, looks much the same. But on closer examination, there is no comparison. The fit, form and finish on this S&W Scandium Commander is superb and puts my well loved DW CBOB to shame. The trigger is as crisp as biting into a carrot and Jess also did some Crown refining and Polishing - looks great. I think this pistol can now stand proudly beside some of the high dollar, custom made 1911's. If anyone is considering Bobtailing their pistol or any other Gunsmithing, Jess Gypin at On Target Custom Gunworks www.ontargetcgw.com is the MAN!!!!!! He has reasonable prices and delivers in a very short time. I couldn't be happier with another man's work. I plan to test drive this beauty this afternoon and when it successfully passes the test, it will become my#1 Carry Gun. Being Scandium and Bobtailed, this Commander carries and conceals better than my 3" Ultra Carry II. THANK YOU JESS!!!

RANGE REPORT: I took her to the range today and she performed as well as she looks - superbly!! I wish the shooter had done as well. On one of the forums, someone wished me well in keeping a good grip with the smooth Main Spring Housing. In 93 Degree Fla. Humidity I had NO problem. For that matter I like the Bobtail better than the standard 1911 grip which tends to dig into the heel of my hand a tad uncomfortably. I consider myself a lucky man with her and she is now my #1 Carry Gun. THANKS AGAIN JESS!!!!

Jess: that is some beautiful work!
Tegemu: I'm very envious. I've wanted to have a scandium but was waiting to see if S&W would start doing it. If I might ask without being rude, how much did the whole thing cost? (Please feel free to ignore this last request if inappropriate).

If you would contact me either via PM or email, I would be happy to supply the cost of the work.

By the way, I talked with one of the engineers at S&W today. What I suspected all along is what is true. The Scandium treatment of the frame is NOT an anodized coating. It is mixed into the aluminum as a raw component of the forging and is blended with the aluminum, not a coating. So, there is no need to worry about breaking through any coating or anodizing on the frame when doing any modifications. It will not weaken or stress the frame any more than any other normal milling or machining processes that they do when building the gun. Straight from the horse's mouth.
