These are a couple of bobtails that I just finished. The Wilson is a Protector bobtail that I sent to Virgil to re-hardchrome the frame on after the bobtail and chrome the MSH. It is also getting trigger work and a 60 degree target barrel crown. The S&W is Cobracoat back and gray. It will also get a 60 degree barrel crown and the awesome EGW ignition parts, trigger and reliability work. The cocobolo grips that came with the gun just did not look right so I borrowed the grips from the Wilson for now. I have new grips coming and trim all of the grips for the bobtails that I do by hand because the blending is just different enough that the standard bobtail grips just don't look quite right to me. Anyway, here they are.

Hey, that's my baby! :D The black and grey is my 1911 commander. I'm a proud daddy! :D Jess is great to work with and has done a super job on my pistol. Refinished slide and frame, new guts, crowned the barrel, and polished feed ramp. By the time he's done, you'll never know it's a S&W. I will recommend him for all kinds of work. AaMoF, I'm sending my new Kahr P45 to him get the trigger polished and smoothed. Once I get the pistol, I'll post a range report.

Maybe you can post a range report if I decide to send it back. Pretty nice gun, looks good in my safe.........:neener:

Nice guns! Do you have then both with bob tails for CCW? Or do you just like the way they feel more?

Thanks
Ss

Mine has the bobtail for CCW. This is mine primary CCW and bobtail + good IWB holster significantly reduces printing. Since it's the Sc frame, it lightens the load as well. I shot an Ed Brown Cobra Carry and liked the way the bobtail felt shooting as well. If you plan to carry a 1911, check out having it bobtailed.

It does add to the pointability of the gun. It really takes away from the blockiness of the 1911 grip and makes it feel similar to a HP, or XD type of grip. It is not as ergonomic in feel as some of the CZs that I have, but darn close. Especially if you carry, the gun is more concealable and also seems to come to point more quickly. It does not disconnect the heal of your hand from the grip, just positions it in a more upright position. As to felt recoil, for me and my big hands, when you grip the gun you seem to have a more secure grip around the gun because of the decrease in the "grip length" at the base of the gun. If you look at almost all of the modern plastic guns, they have the bottom of the grip positioned at a more straight up angle to the bore than the higher portion of the grip. This is because when gripping a gun, this shape tends to give you a more natural grip on the gun. The bobtail is something that most people either love or hate. They do change the classic look of the gun. But if you try one and like the grip it provides, then it will make the gun a more natural pointer, seems to lessen the felt recoil, and will make it easier to conceal.

Can you post a list of your prices for the bobtail, trigger work, re-crowning, etc. and what is a reasonable turn around time?

Thanks.

I have a Deezulsmoke (Jess ) Bobtailed S&W Scandium Commander (It is shown on his website , the 3rd down on the home page) and I was just about to reply as he has. The improvement in concealibility is remarkable. Mine hides better than my Officers Size Kimber. Another plus is that on a standard 1911 grip, the point of the grip presses into the heel of my hand with a bit of discomfort. Not so with a Bobtail, look at your hand, the heel of the grip naturally curves forward. Jess' prices are very reasonable and his turn around time is great. You might check his website at www.ontargetcgw.com .

I really should see if they can change my handle here too. Deezulsmoke is just too old, like me.

Here are a couple of pics of Brad's gun with the finished grips. These are some prototype VZs that I am working on with them. They look WICKED COOL on this gun! Sorry, I just think they really make the overall package. Brad did well when picking these from the ones that I had.

I was busy at the range today!

I was a busy boy at the range today. I went back to an indoor range and gun shop here in Denver that I used to belong to for several years and can highly recommend. The Firing Line is one of Denver's oldest and best established gun shops. I got quite a suprise when I went in there. Rich, one of the managers I guess happens to be a internet lurker. He had been following my exploits on the internet and actually knew of the bobtails and other work I had been doing. He took Brad's bobtail and started showing it all over the shop to customers and employees and has been referring people to my website for HP and 1911 work. I was very flattered to say the least. He got to handle the gray and black bobtail Smith and the Wilson. I also had a Caspian Xtreme Recon that I was selling and have sold to test along with a 1911 GI spec Caspian. I also had the number 1 Stronhold HP with me in rough and not finished form. The HP has had all of the internal work and slide work done, but not the final front sight installed. I have an iron non-tritium sight on it to get it sighted in. Once cut to height, then the proper height Novak night sight target dot will be installed. I did get tired shooting today. But it was fun!:) Especially seeing the hard work on some of these guns come together. I shot them for function first and then for groups and sight in at 25 feet. The range is 50 feet maximum. I have attached the pics of the Gray and Black S&W as well as the others. They are shooters! The bad guys better leave the new owners alone if they know what is good for them.:what:

I just received the bobtailed S&W black & gray this evening and let me say this is SWEEEEET!!! :D I don't know whether to shoot it or display it! Jess this is wonderful work. I'll hit the range tomorrow. :D

Can't wait to hear the results of your trip to the range. Very happy that it got there in one piece and that you are happy with the way it turned out. I really tried to think of some excuse to keep it for another week or two!
