Well, I just spent this last weekend taking the CCW course here in Dayton, OH, and i'm pretty happy with the results. The course was taught by PPC at the Greene Co. Fish & Game assn.. The best part of the course was that it only cost $125 ($100 for GCFG members) - but I felt the course was not cheap in any other way, the instructor clearly knew his stuff and made sure we knew it too.

The other nice thing about the course was that it was all in two days - Saturday was 10 hrs of class time (+1 lunch), which was kind of rough, but not too bad. Even though I knew about 90% of what was taught, it was still very interesting and I wasn't really ever bored. I only got a 97 on the written exam, but I blew through it in about 7 minutes, so I'll chalk those missing points up to haste :)

Sunday was 2.5 hrs of range time, practicing practical techniques. This was definitely the funnest part of the training :) The shooting exam consisted of several shots from 1, 5, and 7 yards, shooting from the hip, draw & fire, headshots, double-taps, weak/strong hand, position change, tactical reloads, etc.

The interesting thing about the class of ~30 ppl was that I was definitely the youngest one there - I'm 24, and I'd say the majority of the class were a bunch of old coots in their upper 40s & 50s :) Unfortunately, there no young, single, attractive women there. Maybe i'll just have to take the course again :)

Anyhoo, to sum up:
Price: great!
Schedule: great!
Cirriculum: great!
Instructor: great!

Glad to hear your course was great. I just received my permit in NW Ohio. My class was similar. 10hrs of instruction and 2 hours range time. We managed to talk the instructor into shooting after the class so we were done in 1 day.

A firearms instructor from one of the state LEO's showed up to help our instructor monitor the range. I guess they were old friends. This led to a demonstration of several close combat shooting stances and after we had all showed we could shoot safely, we were allowed open range time to try various things.

The class was taught by 2 brothers, the oldest was the Chief of police for Wayne OH.

$125 course fee - $20 coupon from paper = $105. The class was standard NRA basic pistol. It was interesting to get a LEO perspective on the law and it's interpretation.

The class demographics were similar in my class, I'm 34 and was the youngest of the 6 people there: 4 male, 2 female.

When does your permit come through?

Good Luck on never needing it.

The good and Bad

Here State Law holds price of instruction at $60 and class size to 10 without a second instructer. The range charges a yearly membership of $75 then there is $10 for the passport picture Now the State get $125 for the background check the Sheriff gets $25 for taking the fingerprints. So for your $295 you get a five year permit to CCW that is if you are excepted if not nothing is refunded.

...I'd say the majority of the class were a bunch of old coots in their upper 40s & 50s...

This old coot congratulates you on not waiting until you're an old coot to take responsibility for your own safety. I hope you'll encourage all your young coot friends to do likewise.
