No other place to put this. Thought it would be fun to see how some of you think when it comes to survival.
IF you could only take 1 gun and a few items to survive for the rest of your life in the woods, what would you take? Has to fit in a backpack.

My answer is a .22 long rifle due to being able to bring a large amount of ammo that would be lightweight and last a long time. Could carry a few thousand rounds very easily, using only a pouch or 2 in your pack.
My items would be:

Roll of painters plastic (for wind/waterproofing shelter)
Rope (for lashing branches for shelter, tools, and other stuff)
Can or small pot (for boiling water and maybe cooking in)
Matches, or a few lighters and fire starting sticks.
A large knife, or a hatchet for cutting branches
Bag of pinto beans or rice (last a long time in small portions, and does not spoil.)
a few bars of soap for hand, foot and "man spot" hygene (don't need a UTI in the wilderness. haha. with limited use it could last a long time.)

A few other things would fit, so I'm going to wait and see your suggestions for what would fill the rest of my hypothetical pack.

I think this will be a lot of fun.

armalite AR-7 and 3 bricks of ammo. btw, you forgot something to cook with (trangia alcohol stove and a bottle of everclear would be my choice), and water purification (3 litre platypus bladder and a
katadyne hiker pro in my case) first aid kit, layers, map, skip the visqueen and get a space blanket, extra socks, and a deck of cards (to keep you sane)

google the "ten essentials" and update your pack accordingly.

I know about survival in the woods only from what I've read on the Internet. So, an Internet search would be as good as or better than my thoughts there.

Regarding the gun, this question has always fascinated me. There's a balancing act between power and practicality. A .22lr scores high on the practicality scale (low weight, lots of ammo). However, it obviously scores low on the power scale. I guess you really don't have a gun when a large predator shows up for lunch with you as the main course. I’m just wondering.

20 guage shotgun, mix of slugs and birdshot.

In a survival situation I am shooting the largest game animal I can come across be it an Elk, a Deer, or somebodies wandering cow. A 20 guage Brenneke slug will do the job.

Never forget a small first aid kit and toilet paper.

A good knife will get you by but an ouchie on the finger calls for a Band-Aid or in other words,,,,,,,,
Play with the knife long enough and you will need the Band-Aid sooner or later;)

The rest of my life?
I'd pack knowledge. Knowledge, skills, and practice are more valuable than any mechanisms you can stuff into a backpack. matches aren't a necessity if you know how to start a fire with friction or flint & steel (a good steel will last years). Forget lugging a piece of plastic, use nature's shelters. Knowing how to construct and use traps, bow, arrows, etc will keep you fed a lot more years than 2000 .22 cartridges and an AR7. Knowing what can be eaten and where to find it will last longer than pinto beans.
How did mankind ever get along for thousands of years before the advent of firearms? :D
Now a good knife, a versatile hatchet, a several small striking steels...those would be quite helpful. And sure, a gun (or guns) and ammo to start the journey would help. But when the ammo is gone or the gun breaks, you are left with a fancy club. :)

The rest of my life...
I'd pack along tools that would allow me to make the tools that would let me live in (relative) comfort along with as many "farmers knowledge" style books as I could carry (The SAS Survival guide leaps to mind).

Couple good suggestions here. Keep em coming.

BTW, I'd thought about the fact you don't need plastic to build a shelter! But if you're on the run and hit the woods and need shelter fast.... you can still construct an organic living space that is waterproof, but the plastic would help to make your job easier, and keep it somewhat wind proof as well while you were taking your time to construct it.
Plastic would be good for many uses. Could make sort of a bag to transport water to your site.
I know the 22 is like.... no good against big animals, but it's still light, can take a lot of rounds easily. Good for small game, and offers some form of protection. If I could take 2 guns I'd take either a 7mm hunting rifle, or an ar-15. Probably the hunting rifle. But the ammo is big and heavy and would run out fast. even if it did last a long time, it would eventually run out if all you carried was in your backpack. So... a .22lr seemed logical for a longer period of time.

As many bottles of Crown Royal as I can carry and a .22 to shoot the empties with. After that, I'll just play it by ear. Oh, and an extra pair of socks.

actually, everything is listed in a boy scouts manual--add your gun of choice

Halle Berry, the Boomer woman from Battlestar Galatica and Nicole Kidman - these supplies are necessary to repopulate the planet.

A long range 308 with scope to get beans and tarps from some SHTF dude.
