just got 2 new blasters since I'm gonna use my Win M70 in .270 for a primary deer rifle; I got a Mosin Nagant M44 for a range blaster, a backup hunting rifle, and something to have around for random trips into the woods; the other one I got is an Armalite AR180B for a lower cost range rifle and occasional personal protection...

tell me about 'em...the good, the bad, and the ugly...thanks

Well being hes asking about them, he may not know the arsenals.

first whats the year on the M44.
(found on the reciever) second, is there a Star with an arrow, or a triangle with an arrow.
is there a triangle with some numbers ( and obvious chinese writing), a circle with an 11, or just a series of letters?

looking at the Mosin Nagant receiver: round receiver; year marking of 1945r; marking above year appears to be Soviet hammer & sickle; marking below year appears to be triangle w/ arrow inside; I guess it is a Russian WWII or post WWII M44

I thought all the numbers matched when I bought it, but it looks like the magazine floorplate has a 4 digit number crossed off (numbers have a long dash throough them) and a new 2 letter and 3 digit number stamped that matches the one on the receiver;

I'm guessing it was sent back to the arsenal before being 'pickled' and stored; importer's mark indicates CAI...Century Arms International?

Check out http://7.62x54r.net/ and http://mosinnagant.net/ for a lot of Mosin info. SurplusRifle at http://www.surplusrifle.com/mosincarbine/index.asp is another good info site.

FYI - I just saw a sign at my local Dunham's that they were recalling the CAI imported M44's they'd been having on sale twice a month or so since Christmas. Appears CAI mis-marked the caliber when they put the import info on them. Didn't get to see what the incorrect markings were but I don't think a .223 will work. :)

CAI is century/

the triangle means its an Izhevsk, the crossed out and re stamped is an arsenal remarking

I have a mosin nagant rifle that I'm having trouble identifying. It was labeled as a 91/30 when I bought it from Dunhams.
It has 1881 stamped on the receiver and I'm wondering what that means. I was thinking it was the year but that cant be right because they started making them in 1891, right?
