it is the 5M serial range. Has muzzle erosion of 2 and throat erosion of 2 1/2. A field grade that looks plenty good to me :)

I'm sort of helping to sponsor a lady in our local club to shoot some John C Garand matches. Question is the rear sight has NM stamped into the inner ring on the knob. Can we shoot JCG matches with National Match parts?

It doesn't count. Shoot it in the match. What makes a match sight on a M-1 is not the knob, it's the rear sight it's self. A true NM rear sight will be hooded with a 1/2 moa elevation adjustment by turning the hood 180 degrees. Windage is the same on both. There are cheap want a be's which are really a GI type rear sight with a smaller Aperture they try to pass off as a NM sight. I've seen disk's one can get which have finer grooves a person can to make each click 1/2 MOA. Niether ofthese are legal either.

And it sounds good for a field grade. Good job on helping the lady, we need the women joining in to keep our sport alive.

Windage is not the same on the NM and standard sight base. The National Match sight base marked "NM/2A" is undercut to accept the hooded eyepiece. The 64 pitch thread of this sight base and of the National Match windage knob produce a 1/2 minute change in windage for each click of the knob. The 1/2 moa hooded aperture can be fit to either a NM or standard sight base. The standard base windage is 1moa per click with one exception. The SAI spring/dent mod gives you 1/2 moa with the course thread base.

madcratebuilder, Thanks for the unformation since I have one. I was told the windage was 1 inch, maybe this is why I would go from 3 'oclock to 9 o'clock at 600. ;) Oh WAIT! you said windage was 1/2 inch. Maybe this is why I always had half of what I wanted.

The fact remains BrocLuno's rifle is legal.

I begged and borrowed for the NM rear sight and was handed a bunch of parts for my 30-06 short M-1. I don't remember what all was installed because it was 20 years ago.

Actually we got 2 - both SA. The other is mostly stock SA with HRA bolt - it's in the 1M serial range. The sights look OK, but no NM. We have to clean and service these and see which shoots best.

It's for SkyHorses wife to shoot local matches. I didn't want her to start off with a rifle that would be disqualified after she got used to it :(

But, it sounds like it's all good, so which ever works best will be her match gun :)

Anyone want to trade a HRA bolt for a SA bolt?

I think that it would depend upon how much of a sticker the match official wanted to be.

CMP rule 6.3.2 (3) As-Issued M1 Garand states... "NM” rifles, or rifles with NM parts, including NM sights, may not be used in the rifle, except that NM operating rods may be used.

While a NM marked windage knob by itself does not give you a competitive advantage, I would say that it is covered under this rule as it is a NM part. However, I doubt that anyone will cause a fuss in a local match.

I remember a number of years ago there were some rifles DQ'd at Camp Perry JCG match because the Springfield Armory, Inc Garand barrels had flats milled onto them (to aid in installation). Did it give anyone an advantage?...nope. Was a contrary to the rules?...technically yes because it was not a GI profile barrel.

An email to the CMP rules committee should clarify the issue once and for all.

OK, so I emailed CMP and this is what I got back:

"Per CMP Rule 6.3.2 As-Issued M1 Garand states:

in the rifle, except that NM operating rods may be used.

CMP does not sell parts for the rifles. You might try Sarco, Inc. or one of the other parts sites on the internet. Another suggestion would be to go onto our Forum and ask some of the folks if they have parts for sale. There is a whole thread for buying and selling from one another."

Looks like I need to get some replacement parts? That's OK, but who/where is the best source?

I will follow up at CMP forum. But, maybe one of you'all knows a good source too?
