I just got a Sentry G4211 14-gun safe.

I was holding off on more gun purchases pending this, as I have two small children, and wanted to make sure any weapon I had could be safely stored.

Some ideas I'm kicking around for additional purchases:

Ruger 10/22
.22lr target pistol of some sort
I have a suspicion I will end up getting a shotgun of some variety, and an assortment of rifles, once I've decided what i want them for and read up on them.

Oh, a Cricket rifle for my daughters to learn to shoot -- my oldest is 8, and probably ready.

Oh, and cheap ammo, when i can find it.

m1a all the way, Im only 24 and even in the age of a wide variety of .308's this is my favorite

Congrats on the purchase. You're doing things in the correct order. I wasn't mature enough to buy the safe first, but I have one now. :)

The 10/22 is a good choice. For a good pistol I recommend the Buckmark. A Cricket is small. Your 8 year old will out grow it quick but your young one should fit it fine.

Have fun!

I am more of a rifle guy myself.

I have 3 pistols and 7 rifles and one shotgun.

I would make sure you have a 22 rifle for you and one for the kids. a 22 pistol as well.

For the 22 pistol I would strongly look at the Beretta Neos or the Ruger Mk II I dislike the Mk-III because of the California aproved loaded chamber indacator.

Shotguns depends on how much you want to spend and what for. If you want a clay and hunting shotgun and can afford it get a over under Browning or Ruger Red Lable.

If you want a do it all shotgun then get a remington 870 or Mossberg 500.

Well, you don't say what you already have, but.....

You need an M1 garand, an AR, an AK, a K31, and a Mosin of some flavor.

For handguns you need a 1911, a nice revolver (S&W 686 or similar), and a good 9mm.

For shotguns you need a Remmy 870 or Mossy 500.

Don't forget you can use the safe for more than guns and ammo. It's a great secure storage place for laptop computers, cameras, documents, rare coins, etc.

I like the bigger safe comment. Mine is now full, and I'm kicking myself for not getting a bigger one.

Why not get a Ruger Challenger, it will allow you to use the same magazines as your 10/22, and the one that I managed to shoot is wickedly accurate.

I would recommend a Marlin model 60 over a Ruger 10/22, better accuracy right from the box.
I would second the Ruger MKII or a Buckmark- both are quality .22 handguns.
M1A (Garand) I prefer the Springfield over the Iver Johnson.
A handi-rifle so you can swap barrels and shoot any caliber you want.
An AR platform so you can swap barrels to any caliber you want.
An 870 Remmington or 500 Mossberg shotgun.
A Glock 19 in 9mm
A Colt .45
A S&W Model 10 or 686 to fill your revolver slot.
That is what I did, but the best advice I can give is rent them and try them before you buy. Join a club and meet people, you will be surprised by our gun culture.

Whatever your heart desires, your budget can stand and your wife won't divorce you because of.

I would recommend that you go out and buy whatever strikes your fancy, shoot it and if you like it, keep it until you find something you like more. If you don't like it trade or sell it and get something else. Soon, you will have a safe full of guns that you like and you will be looking for another or a bigger safe.
