Busyhands94,

I keep looking at these pistols on the NAA web site. I'm still having trouble getting my head around the idea that carrying the pistol with all five chambers loaded and capped with the hammer on half-cock is safe. I don't really see what the rebounding firing pin does for you there. If it's a true rebounding firing pin, then the firing pin should be too short to reach from the hammer face to the cap, and would have to rely on being struck a sharp blow and its inertia carrying it forward to set off the cap. As such it would seem like a safer way to carry it would be with the hammer down on a loaded and capped chamber, as with the hammer down, should the pistol be dropped or otherwise struck on the hammer, the hammer would be against the frame already and not be able to transfer any energy to the firing pin.

Maybe I'm all wet here. If so, somebody please enlighten me.

But I do have another question. Looking at the pictures on NAA's web site, I see what looks like slots, one per chamber, on the cap end of the cylinder. They almost look like they could be safety notches into which the hammer could be let down into between chambers a la a Remington New Model Army. Can you tell me what those are for?

on the cartridge versions of the pistol they have the safety notches but not in the blackpowder pistols. however, the half cock locks up nice and tight. if you put the gun in a holster you are lessening the chances of an item prying the hammer into full cock and the weapon discharging, especially if you only have the pistol in it's holster in that particular pocket with no other items.

Just looked at the online owner's manual. Looks like a 2.5gr charge for the Companion. I didn't see anything about the charge for the "magnum" version. Is it different? And what kind of velocity do you get from a 30gr pill with only 2.5gr of powder under it?

Some folks load the NAA's with Bullseye smokeless powder for improved performance, as well as with 4F and 777.
The following thread has some performance info., other threads can be found by using the advanced search function that's located under "private messages" on the bar at the top of each page. Specify the black powder forum for the most relevant search results.

i just got some Triple seven, i loaded my pistol up with the bullets provided. it is definitely getting some real FPS. this thing went through a 1/2 inch thick chunk of plywood like a hot knife through butter. NOT A TOY BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION. well, maybe for the full grown men it is a toy, but my gosh is this thing powerful!!! i could hardly believe how nicely it worked!

A bullet is often called a "pill" because it's medicine for whatever ails ya'!
I'm looking forward to seeing them being fired in a video sometime. :)

I was hoping to hit the range this weekend, but it's raining steadily. I'm jealous ... but look forward to seeing your videos. I had a NAA mini-Mag revolver for a while, and liked it fine, but the .22 WMR ammo was pretty expensive, and I didn't find the gun particularly useful, and I have others I prefer for CCW. But I'm liking what I'm hearing about a BP version; that sounds fun, if not practical.

the .22 Black powder magnum is so much cheaper to shoot. the conical bullets are not too expensive, the powder is $30 a pound but lasts forever, and percussion caps are not too bad either! not to mention you don't have to go through an FFL in most states to buy one!
