My wonderful wife went to the gun shop yesterday and got me a brand new S&W 1911 pd commander, with the scandium(sp?) frame. Any one had one of these and any thoughts for CCW with this?

It is the only weapon I REALLY have been drooling over, but knew if I bought it, there would be trouble. I carried all day today, and this is the first weapon (other than compacts), that didn't mess my back up.

But was only able to fire 10 rounds this afternoon. Fed through both McCormick and Eagle mags with no problems, but had ball in both. Hand feeding corbon and cheap winchester JHP worked perfectly. Hopefully can get out Sat. and give it a full once over at the range.

Hell of a pistol. Congrats. Please get back to us after you've been able to get some good shooting in with it.

Frandy, your comming soon has grips similar to what I put on mine. The orange color grips came off 10 minutes after I got home.

Love mine. One of the factory mags came with a weak spring, but that was easily fixed. I just sent it back because the grip safety isn't working, and S&W actually sent me a prepaid FedEx label to ship it back. Nice. While it's there, they're going to put night sights on it for me.

Despite the minor problems, this is a wonderful gun. Since I switched out the mag spring, I've gone 600 rounds (various ammo, alot of it junk) without a hitch. Extremely accurate, with great sights and impeccable fitting. The only modification I've done was switching to VZ grips.

I haven't used either of the factory mags, have a few mccormicks and eagle. I think I may get my colt out of the shop and do some custom work to it. After firing a few with this, it makes my colt feel bad.

Finally got out to give it a good once over.

Yesterday fired a little over 100 rounds of WWB and 20 winchester personal protection JHP's. At 15 yards the factory sights are perfect. Had 3 FTF, then noticed a small mark on the feed ramp (on the frame part). Took home and did another cleanup and checkout of the slide and frame, all wear looks normal, other than the small mark.

Today fired approx. the same type and amounts. Had couple stove pipes with live round (never seen that). Then my eagle mag came apart. Only had approx 30 rounds through when that happened so every thing else was with McCormick mags, not the slightest hitch from then on. I have not used the factory mags at all, just put them in the box when I put the box away.

For a weapon that is MUCH lighter than my full size Colt, recoil is not bad, mabe slightly harder than the Colt, but not much. Still has a natural "point", can rapid fire at a man size target without aiming, with 90% kills. Accuracy is probably better than the Colt, but that is due to better sights. But for a defensive carry weapon, sights aren't used. Or mabe thats just me, but I never lined the sights up when under fire. I just want a great natural point, and thats what is so great about all 1911's.

The "mark" is gouging from the types of followers that are used in the McCormick and other type of mags. I only use the rounded type followers in my 5" 1911PD.

Good luck with it.

Wilson, Novak, MecGar, Tripp and so forth. I use Wilson 47D's in mine and haven't had a problem. I also use the supplied ACT mags and have yet to have any issue with them.

You want a follower that has a front "skirt" on it like the factory mags.

Mec-Gar flush fit 8 round magazines use the Devel follower which os almost exactly the same as the McCormick Shooting Star. The 8 round Mec-Gar magazines with the little "finger extension" use a skirted round follower.

I have found that by slightly rounding the lower point one can often stop the follower from gouging the feed ramp without affecting the reliability.
