just how durable is a AA maglite?

Here are some options for fast, simple, drop-in upgrading of performance on a Mini Mag (but not dirt cheap....then again you only need to buy once ):

#1) Inceases run time dramatically : http://flashlightreviews1.home.att.net/reviews/opalec_newbeam.htm

#2) Increases light output AND run time dramatically :

Yea..they work good....( each retails for @ $24 on line ).....don't want to hijack the thread but I thought "inquiring minds" might like to check it out since it got mentioned in a post above.

About the Znich

why? it's pretty expensive and the runtime isn't great, is it a lot brighter than other comparitively priced weapon lights?
I tried one out recently on a shooting buddy's Norinco AK. It lit up the 100 meters range very well. It felt very rugged, I liked the format of it and it comes with quite decent clamps to fit to my AK and 1300 pump.

On comparison of power, I have to say I'm not that well informed. I used to work a lot with a Mag charger and the Znich performed at least as well, per gut feel. Runtime seems to exceed 30 minutes on cheap 1,2V 2300MAh rechargeables.

I still wouldn't trust the AA Mag even if it could be improved power- and switch-wise. But the links that have appeared here seem to provide more alternatives. Got to keep looking.

Surefire G2 Nilotron

$34 or less.

There's just not enough light coming out of an AA Maglite.

does surefire make a weapons mount for that? i've looked at them, but since i'm not sure if i can get a good mount i havent bought one havent been able to find anything one their site either.

Any type of shock while the lamp is on will result in lamp failure. I use one daily in my job duties peering into dark places. They work great for their intended purpose but they are not a weapons light. I did find a red anodized one in the middle of a busy intersection. It sustained lots of external damage but worked from the moment I twisted it on. There are lots of alternatives that are more suited for the application you need.

Schuey2002: Oh great, thanks a lot. ANOTHER forum designed to make me spend all my disposable income! I had a hard time finding out how to order one of those lights... as someone mentioned, the thread is 80 pages long! Is there a website for that mod?

I've had one for over six years now. The finish is pretty beaten but the only thing that needed replaced was bulbs and batteries.

All you have to do is 2 things: 1. buy 1" weaver rings 2. Take a dremel tool and dremel down the waffel pattern where the ring will fit.

I have this setup on my AR and a few thousands rounds through it with no problem.

Sorry, I didn't mean to do that to you, Sven! :D

If you want one, you need to put your name down on that thread saying, "Give me!" or "I want one!". Then you get to wait until your name is put on another list (posted by Kevin) saying that you can NOW send him the funds via Paypal.

There are now over 700 people who have requested one. So, if you call dibs on one RIGHT NOW, you're still going to have to wait until sometime in '05 before you would be in a position to purchase one..

As they say, "All good things come to those who wait." :p

Here's Kevin's website >> http://home.mchsi.com/~lambda/lambda3.htm

Just another testament to their toughness

I managed to wash mine in the washing machine last week along with an ink pen (there's a reason the wife doesn't like me to do laundry). Dropped 2 new batteries in it and it works just fine. Ink pen is pretty screwed tho'. :D

Durable enough yes, weapons light no

The Maglites are not the best possible weapons light but they are good for the Kubaton role - remember that Ayoob suggests practicing strikes by driving nails with the flashlight.

I'd want a loose attachment so I could pull maintenance but I'd use a Maglite if that's all I had.
