I have a mosin-nagant 7.62x54R as well as a SKS 7.62X32. I know, everybody has one or has had one. My question is, do they make hunting ammo for them. They are not, nor will ever be my first choice in hunting. I just wonder if there are hollow points or soft tips that can be use for 75 yard shots. I can't see much beyond that and will never take a shot that I do not feel I can have a one shot, one kill situation. Just wondering.:confused:
 
Softpoints for either would be fine. Check out Brown Bear's 203 grain SPs for the 7.62x54R.

If by "they" you mean standard American ammo producers, then the answer is "yes." Sporting-use (softpoint) 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R can be had at any decently stocked sptg gds sto, made by Rem, or Win, or I think Federal. Myself, I can't see mail-ordering the stuff, as you'd only be buying 2-3 boxes of 20 rounds for sighting-in, practicing, and hunting. The freight on mail-order would probably counterbalance any saving in price from the mail-order places.

Me, I get all my ammo from Smokey Joe's Reloading, Inc, and so far that outfit has a 100% record in stocking exactly what I want. :D Cheaper than buying ready-made, too. I do reload 7.62x39; no experience with the x54.

As far as my handle, I was a civil engineer in the United States Air Force. I was in the Military Airlift Command in Little Rock Arkansas. It was the 314th tactical airlift wing. I then transferred to the 23rd tactical fighter wing which was derived from the flying tigers. It was at the time the Tactical Air Command. It has all changed since I have been out. My old .45 is gone. Now it is the 9 mm. My old M 60 is gone, not sure what is there now. My OD greens are gone, now I believe it is BDU's. I think I am getting older, not sure. USAF, just one of the branches defending our freedom...

So are you still a practicing engineer? If so, where. No to get off topic too much. That is what I am studying and doing, where I work is always looking for good engineers, and as soon as I graduate (18mo.) I'm looking for an engineering firm outside of California to relocate to.

As far as hunting. I've hunted with my sks, wolf makes sp and hp ammo that works fine. It's on par with 30/30 for energy. I've not hunted with my Mosins yet, but plan to use my m38 for pig later this month. They can be accurate, depending on the condition of the rifle. The sks I wouldn't trust out past 100 yards for mid-sized game, and would prefer sub 75 yard shots. That is why I quit hunting with it. My m38 and 91/30 are good out to 150 yards with the original sights. After that I prefer a scope while hunting. But that's my preference. I have a friend that can hit 6" steel plates with his Mosins out to 300 yards consistently. I prefer my Yugo 24/47 mauser with scope for anything beyond 100 yard which is closer to what I normally see in southern california.
 
A great deal of irony exists with that question. I graduated A/C and heating school, then graduated from electronics technical school. I now work for the U.S. Civil service. I now do Coastal Restoration and Marsh management projects. I work with State and Federal engineers. I review all of their projects and make the final changes necessary. Just wanted to get out of the hustle and worries. If you are interested, I am in Louisiana and we need civil engineers in the worst way. If you get to a point that you need some help. Wonder how well I could adapt to Louisiana life? My guns would try and rust on me! Thanks for the connection, when I'm done with school if I can't find something I'll keep that in mind. I've got family outside California(that I know well) in Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, North Dakota, and Iowa. I'm putting those at the top of my list to stay close to family if I can. My best friend works in the AC industry, thats some hard work. Roof top unit installs in Indio are the types of things that dissuade me from it (120 degrees and 90% humidity on the ground) I did some electrical inspection on the Salton Sea at a desalination plant several years back in July and August. That got brutal.
In Louisiana you should be fine hunting with an SKS. You wont see many real long shots from what I've heard. The 7.62x39 will be plenty accurate for deer in those short distances. To test it, see if you can hit a normal pie plate at 100 yards consistently, that pie plate is the size of the vitals area (more or less) of a deer. If you can hit something that size well with your rifles you have got more than enough gun to hunt with.
