Well, I got rid of the .44 marlin today and on the way back swung through the flea market and what did I see, but a sweet little .22 mag calling my name... I've been looking for one for about a year now and this one was apparently the one I was supposed to get :D

I got some CCI gamepoint ammo for it (40gr. 1875 fps) and after I threw the little k-mart scope away and replaced it with another cheapo but slightly better scope put some rounds through it. Didn't have a chance to go out to the 100 yard range I have set up but I dialed it in in about 5 shots and it seems pretty darn good!

There does seem to be quite a bit of powder residue in the barrel after firing these rounds, is that maybe a bad batch of ammo or is this normal? Never had a .22 mag before so I figured I'd ask here.

I'll give a better report tomorrow when I get to go out and use my 100 yard range out back.

Good for you man ! I also have been looking for a marlin .22 mag for quite a while . All I've seen for the last 6 months or so was of the synthetic stock variety & I like wood stocks . So , I "settled" for a Savage 93 in wood for a price I could not refuse . Shot it last weekend & was impressed . Now its wearing a new Simmons 3-9x32 and I get to try that out tomorrow . Cant wait . Have fun with yours ...................

what a coincidence. I picked up a 783 22 mag bolt action today at auction for 170 bucks. I have never owned a 22 mag before. Really nice nice stock with sharp checkering and even has a white spacer on the pad. Doesn't have a front sight but, that's no big deal as I'll put an old Bushnel on it tomorrow. I put a few rounds thru it today and seems to feed and cycle OK. I would like to find a front sight for it just for prosperity. Any idea where a guy might find one?

I have been looking for one for over a year, but so far the only examples that were reasonable in price have had BAD triggers that were just unacceptable to me. I like the 783 because of the tube mag and I will continue to look until I run across one with a decent trigger. When I find it, I will put a VX l or a Buckmaster on it and it will have found a home for the duration.

Anyway, congrats and enjoy.

well, I overpaid for mine! I got it for $250 but I like it better than the synthetic wal-mart guns, plus it was a flea market buy so those are just cash and go. No waiting and no b.s. that's worth a few bucks by itself to me. Not to mention it's the first one I've come across in quite a while now. They had a marlin 597 at the local gun shop, but it was $450 and I can't quite see paying that for a .22, magnum or not...

It's in pretty decent condition, the shroud from my front sight is gone, but other than that I'd put the gun at an honest 80% condition, maybe a little higher as I tend to under-appraise my stuff.

slept in a bit today, I'll be heading out after a good breakfast to put some rounds through it, hopefully I'll see all this super accuracy I've heard about! I'll report back with some info.

sorry for no pictures :(

Did pretty well, as luck would have it on the way to my 100 yard range I spooked 3 deer, the first time I've seen one since the game wardens issued me another depredation permit on the farm... Took a 60 yard shot at one, missed entirely, turns out I was about 8 inches high at that distance. Oh well, at least it scared 'em off for a bit.

anyhow, when I quit holding the gun I was able to reduce my grouping from 2 inches down to about 1/2 inch at 100 yards! After the deer encounter and running around a bit to make sure I actually did miss I was a little shaky. I finally put my jacket and some stuff I had on the atv on the rack to make a good rest and only held it with one finger on the barrel and one to pull the trigger. You could cover the 100 yard grouping with a nickel! Admitted it was only a 3 shot group, but that's good enough for me! Now if only I could hold the gun that still!

still getting quite a bit of powder residue in the barrel, but it doesn't seem to affect anything so I'm not going to worry about it.

I like this gun! I'll try to find some milk jugs to do a 100 yard penetration test today, no one seems to do that, they always do a point blank penetration test...

Hipoint, I see where Numrich gun parts has the hood for your front sight. If you are going to remove and put on a scope, I'd be interested in buying the complete front sight assembly from you.

I bought a Marlin .22WMR about 1.5 years ago. I was looking over Guns America and saw one listed in an ad for another rifle and ended up buying it. I love it. The .22WMR is a great little round.

pacsd, thanks for the info on the shroud. I may pick one up as I kinda like the shrouded front sights.

I won't be removing my irons though. as soon as I can afford it I'll be having this thing drilled/tapped and some good see-throughs put on. I don't trust those beavertail .22 style scope mounts very much especially when you add the extra leverage of see-through mounts on them.

I despise that almost every new gun made has no iron sights, I like a scope but iron sights are indispensable in my opinion.

I couldn't find enough milk jugs today to make a good penetration test, but maybe tomorrow after work I'll swing by the folk's house and raid their garbage too. I really want to see what this ammo does at 100 yards, CCI advertises that it is still got the speed and energy of a really hot .22 LR at point blank, so that should be pretty good medicine for all the critters on the farm that don't belong here...
