I just got it from Academy Sports am I the first to find out the good or bad news? I hope it will make a decent deer rifle for the up coming season here in Missouri next month anyone else have any experiences with this rifle? Thanks for all input! :)

Not familiar with the rifle. Looked on Academy's website and can't find it. The 6.5 CM is a good round that lives up to the hype.

The M18 is new for 2018. The one I held seemed very solid. If they come out with a nice wood stock version, it'll definitely be on my list.
I just looked up their rifles. I’d never pay $8k for a rifle. But they sure are gorgeous. I’d really like to handle one of their M18’s. Probably wouldn’t buy it because it doesn’t fill ANY need. But someday it might.....

How much was it at Academy? Didn't know they made an "economy" version. I put that in quotes because it's kind of like the Tikka - Sako's version of economy is still over $600. (and well worth it).

The M12 is one fine rifle.

I did a little research and it appears to be a budget rifle along the same lines as the Tikka T3, Ruger American, and Savage Axis. All of them have a solid top action with a detachable magazine. Both qualities that greatly aid accuracy while keeping costs down. I'd like to see one in person and if the price, quality, and accuracy is in line with the Tikka or Ruger would be a good option.

Didn't realize that there were shots on deer over 500 yards in Missouri, since that's when the 6.5 Creedmoor actually has more energy than the .308.

At typical hunting shots of under 300yds, the .308 is ballistically superior as a hunting round.

But the rifle looks interesting...

Just because the 6.5 has better external ballistics at range doesn't meant it won't tip over little Bambi just as well as the mighty .308 closer in. There's nothing I would shoot with my .308 that I wouldn't shoot with my 6.5 all ranges included. Surely we can have a thread about the man's new rifle that doesn't get warped into another cartridge bashing festival.

OP, I've picked up the Sauer 100 at Sportsman's Warehouse a few times and it stuck me as a really well thought out and executed rifle. I think that the M18 and S100 are basically the same rifle with small differences sold under the sister brands, can anyone who has seen both confirm? I may have to pick one of the Sauer versions up one of these days, especially if they came out in stainless, it stuck me as Tikka-esq, with a 3 position safety an an upgraded magazine setup, certainly not a bad starting point.

+1 for the pictures request

You really need to study ballistics a bit more.

The bullet on the left is a 143 gr 6.5. The 2nd bullet is a 150 gr .308 compared to a 178 and 200 gr .308. The 143 gr 6.5 beats 308/150 gr and 308/165 gr bullets in penetration by a wide margin at any range. And does it with less recoil, better accuracy, and less wind drift. Energy never killed anything, it is penetration and shot placement that kills stuff. Sectional density determines penetration, not bullet weight, and with similar bullet weights the smaller caliber always wins. It is only when we move up to 175-180 gr .308 bullets that we see comparable SD's and penetration in game and you have to go to a 200 gr .308 bullet to beat it.

The best anyone can say about 308 is that it can hang with 6.5 CM for the 1st 500 yards, albeit at the expense of considerably more recoil. Beyond 500 and the 308 starts fading fast.

Sorry, but I'll take the word of my father who has hunted big game on nearly every continent for over 50 years over some random internet person. He says the .308 is superior at killing animals at ethical hunting distances than the 6.5 Creedmoor.

What you posted sounds great and makes sense. But my dad is the smartest person I know when it comes to hunting and competition rifle shooting. Seriously, his credentials are pretty impressive and he is a nationally known person in the world of BPCR competitive shooting.

I will be in the Missouri deer woods at first light on Nov. 10; I will be carrying a .308. Enjoy your new rifle; the 6.5 is plenty of medicine for a Mo. deer (and then some) along with a plethora of other calibers. I simply don’t understand not sharing in another hunter’s joy of his shiny, new rifle - we all know what that feels like. Good luck to you sir, be careful in the woods and enjoy the sunrise on Nov. 10.

If I were going out on opening morning (which I will) and I could choose between the two, I’d most likely take the 6.5 simply because it kicks less and will still be adequate. Does that mean the .308 wouldn’t Work? Millions of dead critters would argue otherwise.

As noted, lately every mention of another cartridge other than the 6.5 eventually boils down into a Creedmore vs the world bash festival. Used to be the .308 vs .30-06. After reading some of those opinions, you’d think a .308 was less lethal than a squirt gun.

His sounds like a really nice rifle, and I’d like to see a range report. Congrats on the new acquisition

No but I’m about to, ordering one soon. Mauser is known for quality and recent reviews have stated that this model delivers well beyond its price point. Additionally, ballistic tables have well established the 6.5 Creedmoor to be “essentially unmatched” in its class - based on a simple matter of physics (real science), not opinion. You made a fantastic choice in both cartridge and rifle! Enjoy!
