Hey gang,
“New guy†checkin’ in with a quick story:

So, I’m dropping my son off at school today (summer vacation ends earlier every year!) and they have a couple people standing in front of the school to open car doors, let kids out, say good morning… This 50-ish woman opens my truck door with a smile, then literally screams “GUN!!†I grab my son by the arm (to keep him in the truck), start looking for someone with a gun and thinking about a tire smoking exit. The adrenaline starts pumpin’ – And I slowly realize that everyone is looking at us and she’s looking in MY passenger side floorboard…***? Then I hear her mumble “Oh, it’s a tripod.â€

I was speechless, pissed, but absolutely 100% speechless.

I pulled into a parking lot and went around the truck to look at it from her perspective. I just couldn’t see anything but a harmless camcorder tripod. The more I think about it the madder I get, mainly because she scared me with her terrified squeal. I mean, good Lord, could this woman have bought into the “Guns are bad†BS so thoroughly that the mere sight of a “gun†could scare her this bad?

Tomorrow I’m going to shake it at her (the tripod, that is). She’ll probably wet herself.

Hey, that wasn’t really gun related was it? Sorry about that.

Well, off to ask questions in another forum.

I've heard that in some states there is no law about posessing a firearm while dropping your kids off at school... Ever consider buying a gun rack? ;) ;) Imagine the look on her face then.

Gurnard...

Welcome. I hope you stick around and participate. The more input, the better The High Road.

"Tomorrow I’m going to shake it at her (the tripod, that is). She’ll probably wet herself."

Uh, bad idea I think. Yeah, she may be bliss-ninnie and a hoplophobe, but before you rub it in her face, I would suggest a more reasoned approach. More than a few people here used to be anti-gun but were changed, some by positive interaction with gun-owners. It's worth a chance with her.

Maybe talk to her calmly about responsible gun ownership and try to get her to see that guns are not the problem, but responsible gun owners are part of the solution.

Good luck.

Hey gang,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I’m always hesitant to post on a new board - Sometimes you hang out & read for a while to get a feel for the general tenor and still seem to offend people just by being “newâ€. I’m sure you’ve all seen it.

Anyway, I didn’t shake it at her (I was only kidding about that). She wasn’t even out there this morning. Who knows, there may be a reason for her over-reaction.

On the gun rack – Every now & then you still see that (legal but too inviting to thieves I guess) but I’m pretty sure we have a law against guns on school property, not 100% on that though.

Anyway, I probably won’t post much. I mainly just read, learn and ask the occasional question. Most boards are populated by people that know a lot more than I do about the boards main subject. So I generally stick with “off topic†stuff & leave the rest to the more knowledgeable folks.

Thanks again.

The thing that boggles the mind is....how is that reaction of sceaming"gun!" actually going to help anyone..I mean if it was a gun:1)you're a good guy and don't plan on using it to hurt someone unless you need to or 2) you're a bad guy,and would've shot her for ratting you out...sheeple make no sense to me.....fear of an inanamate object...you never hear anyone yell"tire iron!"......
It's like people who find out you shoot and they say"you shoot GUNS?!"like you're a freaking psyco-leper.......I usually say"you DON'T?!"..

If you were carrying would you have patted yourself to see if it was concealed?

Kind of reminds of the story about two pickpockets working a room. One yells "Pickpocket!!" and everyone in the rooms checks and inadvertently reveals the position of their wallet.

Dumbass's are everywhere. You just can't seem to escape them! Some more than others just like the Lady you describe at school.

Wow, think about what would have happened if a police man was present. Hearing a panicked scream of "GUN!" would surely bring a swift response, especially at a school. I would have a chat with the principle. That ladies actions were unreasonable and potentially dangerous.:uhoh:

Wow. I guess it would be wrong to bring a different object each day to point at her and yell "BANG!"

I was thinking the first week would start with a bottle of Windex, followed by a reading lamp, a set of scuba flippers, a bouquet of wildflowers and maybe a sock monkey to finish the week and set the tone for a fun friday at school.

Alternatively, you could offer her Zanex in a loud voice. . . . or, if she ever has the gall to approach your vehicle again, scream "I'M UNARMED! I SURRENDER!"

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY- please do that next time you see her!

Where do such people get their education? Public Schools?

Seems the "education" consists only of irrational "feeeelings". Wasn't there once a country called United States of America? Looks like it turned to La-La Land (not entirely yet, thank God)

Gurnard,

First off, welcome to THR. Where are you in TN?

To shed a little light on the subject of carrying a firearm on school property, here's an excerpt from the TN Dept. of Safety website:

(c) (1) It is an offense for any person to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any firearm, not used solely for instructional or school-sanctioned ceremonial purposes, in any public or private school building or bus, on any public or private school campus, grounds, recreation area, athletic field or any other property owned, used or operated by any board of education, school, college or university board of trustees, regents or directors for the administration of any public or private educational institution. It is not an offense under this subsection (c) for a nonstudent adult to possess a firearm, if such firearm is contained within a private vehicle operated by the adult and is not handled by such adult, or by any other person acting with the expressed or implied consent of such adult, while such vehicle is on school property.

Here's the link.

The appropriate law is Title 39, Chapter 17, or 39-17-1309.

Hope that helps.

Frank

Welcome aboard and yes, it IS a gun related posting.
For your info. here in TN you can have a heater on you while delivering and picking up kids at school. BUT, you can not get out of the vehicle with it or handle it during your time there....OK?
AND, you must check local laws.

OEF_VET, you beat me to it! :-]

Thanks for straightening me out on the school property rule.

OEF_VET: I'm just outside of Gallatin.

1911Ron: How many and when do you want to pick them up?
