because I just came back from the range and had the GREATEST time. Hope you don't mind me sharing just a bit of exhileration. As I have said previously, I just got back into guns after a 20 year lapse. I had not shot a centerfire handgun until 2006 and I am 63. So, I had purchased a .22 Heritage Rough Rider recently and I just carry it in my trunk locked up in my shooting box. I was coming back from a town 25 miles away and the range here, an outside free one on public recreation property, was on the way. I had to stop and I see now why it is a good idea to have shooting equipment along at all times. So, instead of using paper targets which is about all I have done so far, I gathered up some empty soda cans and empty shotgun hulls and started plinking at them. Actually, I was hitting better than I expected of myself. I also found that cans and hulls give a really satisfying bounce when hit or if I hit under them at least. This was more fun than punching paper. I kept this up for an hour or more. While I was doing this I put up some things like this, including some larger chunks of clay pigeon someone left, at the 25 yard spot which is the berm at the end of the pistol range. Again, shooting two hand stance I surprised myself by hitting the targets fairly well. Then, as usual there was one other guy shooting who was nice to talk shooting with a bit. He had a Ruger .22 auto.
So, I had such a fun, fun time...getting out of the city, out of the house, and having some success hitting targets. All in all a wonderful time. Shooting is such a fun sport and a neat way to make some social contact also.

The only negative thing is that people are supposed to clean up after themselves, unattended range and all, but of course they don't. So, I had a large grocery bag with me and filled it with soda cans, ammo boxes, and shotgun hulls that others had left to take home to the trash. (I am sure that if a trash barrel was left there it would be shot full of holes.) So, I am not a saint but..I will close by asking everyone to leave public areas more clean than what you found them. Even if it means, yes, picking up after the slobs.

Thanks for "listening."

Too bad that you stopped shooting for 20 years! On the other hand, now that you're a "born again" shooter, it might help you to stay young! I'm right behind you, at age 60, but I've had 55 years of uninterrupted shooting enjoyment (OOPS! I can't say that I enjoyed my 13 months in combat, back in 1967-1968, but I sure did a LOT of shooting!)

You're right, about reminding everyone to clean up after they shoot. One of my (former) favorite spots to shoot was in a semi-remote spot in the Mojave Desert (So Cal). It was pristine when I found it, 30 years ago. Little by little, it was obvious that other shooters liked that spot, too, for junk started showing up. Then, an old car was towed out there and shot up. About 5 years ago, that spot looked more like a trash dump! While it's still a "shootable" location to use, it's also an eyesore!

Desertshooter thanks

so much for serving our country. I was lucky...I was in the Navy and on an aircraft carrier off Nam in 65 when we began air strikes against the country.

Great to be back

moe, Shooting is just fun. Glad to have you back in the active ranks. pete
