Who would want to be in school the day before they let out for Thanksgiving anyway? "You should really just let me stay home today, save the drive to school and all" is what I heard this morning from my 12 year old boy.

So if we're gonna skip we might as well do something that would really send the school administration over the edge eh?

Rifles at 75 yards, handgun at "whatever they did in Miami Vice" he says...

He loves to shoot the FN, but he clearly needs some work....
The low recoil tends to make him want to shoot too fast. But that's fun too.
300 rounds downrange from that thing today..... It's filthy.

He also fancies himself a bit of Rob Leatham, but the hostage would disagree I think. Once again, the speed demon.....
His claim that the hostage was a collaborator will be worked out in court.

But then all of a sudden out of nowhere you give him one of those NFA, highly regulated, pure danger with no use whatsoever SBRs and he can shoot like mad. The flyer was when a piece of hot brass landed on the back of his neck. I said that was clearly an acceptable excuse. 200 rounds of XM193 down the tube with this one :)

In the bragging rights photo album this is the only one I'll be showing ;)
The EoTech works I think, he wants one on everything now.....

I offered up a full mag through the PTR91 but he gracefully declined.

I suspect he learned more here than at "blanket day" at school. I didn't even ask what "blanket day" was.

I am pretty sure I don't want to know.

You let him skip school to go to the range?

Well, way to go!!!

Looks like he had a lot of fun too.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

A pessimist would argue how someone would let a child handle such dangerous assault rifles.

An optimist would see a father bonding with his son.

I wish to become a Dad like you some day :)

"You should really just let me stay home today, save the drive to school and all"

Can't think of a single flaw in that, personally. Seems like the perfect way to spend a school-less day :)

I'm thinking of trying that excuse for work..."we're closed thanksgiving anyway...why not just save me the drive in for the rest of the week?"

Blanket day, or rather night. Well, two guys grab a blanket and the other guys put bars of soap in their socks and then you wait . . .:uhoh::D

Oops, no, wait, wrong blanket day.

That's great, Tex. I see he's wearing #18 out of respect for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. I appreciate that.

Got an uncle question though. At 12 what can he handle? You said he declined your G3 clone in .308. Can he shoot other heavier rifles in .308?

What's the largest caliber he likes to shoot? Do you recommend a .243 as a first centerfire? Maybe .223 or .222 instead?

Memories for a lifetime..............but CAUTION:

I imagine the school admins viewing thes photos would call in Family Services and/or suggest "special" counseling for your son..............don't laugh---it happens!

He fired 2 rounds from my .25-06 today. He said that was "rough" but he said he could do it once or twice if we were deer hunting.....

He won't touch anything .308

I'm just a little jealous of the FN. I didn't have school this week so I hit the range with the Remmy 700LTR.

I know it does happen unfortunately. They still have 4H in the schools here, including the shooting portion.

If it gets that bad in Ft Worth it's time for home schooling.

It may someday, nothing surprises me anymore.

Great pics and an excellent way to spend an day with the boy.

Now personally I will not be having my Elementary basketball team practice either Friday or Saturday...... rifle seaon is open and 10 of my 14 boys (including both of my sons) have plans to hunt this weekend. I also had many of the kids in my 6th grade classes (including a couple of girls) let me know that they were going this weekend. Was talking with one of the parents from my JV team and his son and daughter (11 year old boy and 13 year old cheerleader sister) are both hunting this weekend. It makes me happy to see so many of the young folks hunting and shooting.

wish i had a dad who had guns like that who let me skip class to shoot them

me too. that's probably why I do it..... I think I got to skip school once to ride my bike to town to get cigarettes....

Good going Tex! I started my son shooting with me early on. Bought him a 38 snubbie to carry when we went out to varmint country. We shot together many years. Created a bond that transcended his rebellion years and brought him back when during his "rogue" years he realized he was ruining his relationship with his Dad. What you build now is all you will have to go on later on.

Keep it up!

I remember when I was 12 or 13, we were living in Great Falls, Montana. My dad kept me out of school one day, to go deer hunting. That was pretty frickin' cool.

Good on ya, Tex.

There's always one in these threads.

Maybe your computer screen didn't show the winking smilie. That poster apparently meant it as a joke. But, the kid does look a bit shaggy. A good haircut wouldn't be a terrible thing. ;)
