I have been looking for a CCW gun for several months. I just returned from a gun show and was looking at the Kahr CW9. I liked the way the gun felt with one exception; when gripping the gun, my thumb made contact with the mag release. I'm thinking it would be possible to inadvertently release the mag. this could be embarrassing at the range, but distrous during a self defense situation.

So, I started looking for reviews on the gun and the most recent and informative I found was on The High Road. Unfortunately, it was too old to post a reply. So, I am opening this new thread in hopes of learning if this is a real problem with the gun and any other pros or cons. I'm not a large man so my hands aren't especially large, but I still made contact with the button every time I gripped the gun. Thanks for any help.

I own the Kahr CW9. When I first bought the gun, I found myself releasing the magazine while shooting at the range about every second magazine. Realized it was my grip, I had my thumb resting just above the mag release when I gripped and fired the handgun. I changed my thumb location, and haven't had the problem since.

You say that your thumb is ending up on the mag release when you grip the gun. Seems to me like you will have to practice a different grip, or buy a different handgun. BTW, I like my CW9, and plan to keep it for concealed carry. It is reliable, accurate, and carries well.

I too have a Kahr CW9 for my carry gun and think that for the money it simply cannot be beat. I have +2500 various rounds through mine and have had zero, nada, zilch, not a single problem with it. That's me!

It definitely sounds like a grip issue. If you can change your grip that keeps your thumb off of the magazine release AND works for you then it may be a viable gun for you. If not I would pass as that is something you certainly do not want to happen when you need it the most. Here is a descent video on a grip you may want to try.

Best of luck.

Hello
i have just tried to get the mag to drop with my grip and i have no idea
how you can get your thumb in the location that would make that happen.
but if it dont work for you you might want to try a different pistol.
Also my CW9 has 700 flawless rounds through it and thats pretty decent.
easy to carry and conceal.
good luck

Put a Hogue Handall Jr. on there. It gives it a better grip and that little bit of extra thickness from the "palm swells" makes a big difference.

It sounds like you are using a thumbs locked down grip. Try the more optimized thumb forwards grip...the mag release is shielded by the base of your support thumb

I appreciate all the responses. I'm going to see if my range has one I can rent and try it for real. Thank you.

Just got back from Gulf Shores and two weeks packing my CW9 in a belt slide holster. Thankfully, in that friendly place, it was not needed. I have about five hundred rounds through it and, while it has more recoil (preceived) than my SP101, it is way thinner and about the same weight. I carry it with the extended magazine and have never had any problems with it at all.......except for the few misfires with some reloads made up with highly suspect Rem primers I found in my "shop". No history, badly faded box, whatever. They did fire 100% in my Beretta......

The Kahr CW9 was a great gun for me EXCEPT for the occasional mag-release issue that I also had.

I really wanted this to be my EDC choice, but too often (unless I concentrated hard) I would smack that mag-release. I couldn't wrap my brain around this being o.k., especially in any sort of real-life panic scenario.

Sadly, I traded this pistol in hopes of finding something else.
