Ive decided my first defensive handgun will be a K9. Already had a crush on them from online researching, and fell in love once i got to dry fire one a few times. Perfect feel, weight, dimensions, looks... etc.

3 questions:

-Where is the best place to buy them online? My local shop wants $620 + tax for a standard sites K9... Budsgunshop.com has them in occasionaly and they went for 515.00 + 25 shipping (+ 20 FFL fee), so $560 total.

-Which model do you have/recomend. Im pretty sure the k9098 is what im after, elite trigger and regular stainless.

-What defensive ammo do you choose to use in yours? i will use Winchester white box 115gr. for pratice, but just want some opinions on the mean stuff.

I haven't gotten mine yet, but on price that sounds about right for new guns. I was lucky enough to get mine used, so I paid less than $515.

I think mine is just the 9093/9094 model. I'm certain it's not the Elite version. I wasn't too picky. I felt the trigger on the plain P9, and that was enough for me. I just wanted all steel instead.

I will probably use 124gr for defensive ammo, but I haven't made a decision as to what type yet. Leaning towards Corbon or Speer.

I love my K9, carry it darn near everywhere. It has been 100% reliable in about 1000rds. My carry load is currently Speer 124 gr +P Gold Dot. A little snappy, but not too bad. I have the standard trigger and it is good, reset is a little long though. I paid $565 at a local shop for my stainless K9 with night sights, but that was in '02.

I developed my crush on my K9 immediately after picking it up in my local gun shop, for all the same reasons. I was looking for a replacement for my SW 3914, which I'd recently realized (from info learned on THR) that it was too large for me. I traded it for the K9. Got $350 for the 3914.

I have no info to offer you on this one. I buy my guns at my local shop. Even though I know I'll pay a few more bucks, it's worth it to me. They spend hours with me, letting me handle their guns, and offer great information patiently and kindly, often with humor and stories. That's worth the extra $X to me.

That's the one I got. I purchased it even though it was $520 (three months ago) and more than I wanted to pay. I asked the dealer to call about a price on a 9093. The price of the 9093 had increased by ~$75 more than the 9098 that I was looking at. (Another testament to my gun shop: they were not marking it up even though its price had increased from the MSRP assigned to it when they got it.) I bought the 9098. After researching the stainless, I'm glad I did. (Note the part of the continent I live in.)

For range work, the same 115 gr you mentioned. For SD, Remington Golden Saber 124 gr.

Good luck with your choice. Keep us posted.

what kind of holsters do you guys use to carry them?
After much research over the better part of a month, including starting this thread (that may be of help to you), I ordered a High Noon Topless in black back in August. At the time, they estimated three months to delivery, but checking the order status yesterday, I noticed that it's still a couple of months out. :(

Still, I think it'll be worth the wait.

Sounds like you've got the right idea. You'd probably risk the least trouble by going with a "full-size" steel Kahr. The subcompact and polymer pistols have had some teething issues which may or not have been solved, depending on which internet rumor you subscribe to.

I've got a K9 Elite 98 and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Mine has been perfectly reliable and, surprisingly, a capable plinker. This pistol balances well and points like a hunting dog. The Elite trigger is great, but I am not sure if the regular unit gives up much in terms of pull length or weight.

If the price of a new one gives you a nosebleed (as it did me), you can always cruise the used market. Plenty of Kahrs out there for four bills and under.

I really love my K-9. As far as ammo goes I really like Federal's 9BPLE load, if you like a heavier bullet weight Federal's 124 grain +P+ Hydrashock is an excellent choice as is the Winchester 127 grain +P+ Ranger load.

man those are handsome with wooden grips...

shear stress: glad you mentioned the plinking part, as this will be my only centerfire pistol, and i plan on shooting the hell out of it weekly. Where are some places to "cruise" the used market. im only aware of gunbroker.com.

Try Auctionarms and Gunsamerica. Also, you might see if you can find a K9 locally that you can fondle before you lay down your money.
