Kahr MK9 and PM9

I am seriously thinking about getting a Kahr MK9 or PM9 to replace my Bersa 380 for pocket and tucked-IWB carry. I would like to hear from some people who own these guns. In particular, I would like to hear how they hold up over time. I heard a lot of really bad things about the PM9, but got the impression the MK9 holds up well. Is that correct? I don't want to spend $600-800 on a gun that is not going to last.
 
Get the MK9.
It has a proven track record.
I've had an MK9 Elite 98 for several years now.
The only real problem I've had was when I fooishly broke the extractor while shooting Wolf ammo!!
I've had mine long enough to wear out the night sights, which leads to my second recommendation. Order it with the standard sights and put Trijicons on yourself.
The Meprolites Kahr factory installs ain't worth a tinker's damn!!

If you are going to shoot it a lot get the MK9. If you are going to carry it alot, you'll appreciate the PM9.

PM40 is the gun I end up carrying the most. Best power in the smallest package.

Agreed. The MK9 is more pleasant to shoot, and (without scientific evidence to back this up) will probably last longer as a range gun.

The PM9 seems designed around the idea that you'll practice enough to be competent with it, but leave the long range sessions to something else.

I have the PM9 and no regrets.

I am a person that likes to practice with my carry gun. I expect I'll put 50-100 rounds through it every month, so I don't want something that will be dead after a couple thousand rounds. I know the MK9 is heavier, but I'm betting its more durable.
 
I can't vouch for the longevity of the MK9, as mine is new this year, but the weight doesn't bother me for pocket, ankle, or IWB carry, though for pocket carry I recommend a good holster.
 
I have an MK9 (which I love), but am thinking of picking up a PM9 as well. (I traded a PM9 for this MK9.)

The MK9 is a great shooter. It's heavy enough to be really pleasant to shoot, but small enough to be easily concealable. I carry mine in a C.T.A.C holster and it just disappears beneath a tucked in T-shirt. Having said that, I really miss the light weight of the PM9. A fully loaded MK9 weighs about 27 ounces; a fully loaded PM9 will be about a half pound less.

Which model of Bersa do you currently carry? If you have the "standard" Bersa Thunder, you probably won't find the weight of the MK9 to be that much different. If you have the lighter CC model and wanted something even lighter, you might be find that you prefer the PM9.

Either way, they're both great guns, IMO. Good luck with your choice.

While it is true that the MK9 weighs more than my Thunder 380 CC, it doesn't weight nearly as much as the XD-40 Service I usually carry.
 
IMHO, TRUST steel-framed Kahr pistols. Be more sceptical about polymer-framed Kahr pistols. The shorter the slide, the more earnest this advice. I've owned several Kahr models since their introduction. I've also kept-up with the forum chatter about 'em. Other than some early finish issues, you just don't hear many negatives about steel-framed Kahrs (except weight). You hear considerably more reliability & durability grousing about the polymer models. If I were making your decision...it would be the MK9
 
I have a PM9 with about 500 rounds through it. It has been perfect since round 1. Kahr recommends 200 rounds through the gun for break in purposes. It shoots easy enough that I did that in one session with no problem. It would be nice if you could hold them both before you buy. The MK is a lot heavier. For me, that wouldn't make any difference if I was using a holster, but if I was going to pocket carry, I would not like the weight of the MK. From reading around on the forums, it seems the PM40 had more problems than the PM9.

I already have a year old PM 9 it had to go back to Kahr once early on. It's fine now and a great lightweight pocket 9. I put a couple mags through it a month, clean it and reload from the same box I shot from at the range. Back into the DeSantis Nemesis it goes.

Agreed. That was my reason for choosing the PM9 over the MK9. (I don't care for .40 in guns this little.) In your pocket, the weight is not supported directly by your belt, and a heavy gun wants to drag your pants down all the time. Also, the harder plastic grip frame of the PM is thinner than the MK's steel frame with rubber grips, making it easier to slide out of the pocket. I may add a MK to my collection at some point, though.

My PM did have to be sent back for repair, but it has been fine ever since. I have seen nothing to suggest it would not be durable.

If you pocket carry, I and many other members are fond of the Mika pocket holster. I consider one of some type to be essential.
