I recently picked up a Kahr P40 and been able to run about 250 rounds through it. I've found out, especially with the extended mag (not sure why), that sometimes on recoil, I my thumb will hit the magazine release button preventing the next round from chambering:uhoh: .

Has anyone else had this issue and if so, how do you get around it? I've just been experimenting with placing my thumb in different positions.

Thanks

The small Kahrs are nice guns but folks with big hands may find them to be too small. I've got a P9 and it fits my hands very nicely. A friend of mine with big hands hates it. I've heard quite a few people say they hit the mag release button or they get their thumb sliced by the slide release lever when they fire the little Kahr's. I've never had either problem.

All you can do is keep trying different hand positions until you find something that works then practive until it becomes second nature. Or you may have to eventually give up and replace it with a baby Glock or some other slightly less compact handgun.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with the issue. No problems with the slide stop though. Did skin my knuckle on the slide once when I was experimenting with different grips.

I have found a grip that keeps my thumb out of the way, but it's different than the grip I use to shoot other handguns I own. I'm afraid this could be confusing if I have to use the Kahr in a defensive situation (which I hope never happens anyway).

I really do like how the Kahr conceals. I checked out the XD Compact and the Glock before I settled on the Kahr but they seemed so much bulkier because of their thickness.

Practice... Practice... Practice...

I had to adjust my hand hold a little when I got my P9. The Kahr is so thin my trigger finger was hitting my left thumb during the trigger pull and I had to adjust the position of my thumb. Other than that, I love my P9.

Not sure if I'd want a P40, though. I rented one at the range one day and found that it has a pretty nasty recoil. The P9 with 115gr +p JHP has plenty of self-defense power and is easier to control than the P40.

The .40 does have a kick to it, but I haven't found it to be uncomfortable. I haven't fired the 9mm but maybe if I had, I might have bought it instead. I might not have had as much trouble hitting the mag release with the lighter recoil (although you've experienced it). But I convinced myself I needed the .40 so I'm going to keep shooting it until I get the grip down and can make accurate follow-up shots. I put another 150 rounds through it tonight and the pattern is tightening up and I only hit the mag release a couple of times.

They're great little guns, but I wonder if anyone has provided Kahr with feedback on this issue. Justin Moon seems to be a pretty savy designer that could come up with a solution.
