Well..Lets see,

Before...

And After...

Today I took her out for her initial shooting and break in. Through her went 200 rounds of Winchester White Box and 12 rounds of Speer 124gr Gold Dot +P JHPs. Pretty much a plain jane break in with the cheapest ammo I could find and a few extra JHPs thrown in. Hopefully in the next week I'll have a detailed range report with several loads and chronographed velocities. As you will see very soon even the accuracy reports aren't very technical in nature.:D

Firing Impressions and Reliability

Recoil was very manageable with standard 115grain FMJ as well as the +P JHPs. Nothing uncontrollable but things definitely got interesting after the 150 round mark. Enough that I had to take a slight break. She has just enough bite (actually more like a tiny shove) to make extensive shooting a bit uncomfortable without a shooting glove, but not enough to cause any discomfort. The slim grip just doesn't distribute the recoil energy as much as say, a Glock 26. After a soda I was good to go for the last 50 rounds. In contrast, I'd doubt the average user could get past 50 rounds of .38 special +P in an Airweight snubby as comfortably as 150 rounds though the PM9. Both weapons are approximately the same weight and it would seem the power levels slightly favor the Kahr. The biggest pain was loading the magazines! They tend to have slightly sharp feeling feed lips and are a bit tight brand new.

The PM9 did have a slight tendency to have a round hang up a bit while manually chambering the first round if you did not start from a locked slide or make sure it was completely back before releasing. A slight tap would send the round up the feed ramp. This gradually went away with repeated FMJ chamberings and only happens periodically with the JHPs.This also only happens with a full magazine. There are no problems if you only have five in the 6rd mag or 6 in the 7rd mag. I believe this small problem will be easily cured with a bit of feed ramp polishing and letting the mags start to break in.

Ejection was very positive and most empty casings would land in the same area to the right rear. I fired strong handed and weak with no malfunctions. While firing one handed on my weak side (left) the recoil tended to go up and to the right. When firing the normal strong side two handed hold the pistol recoiled straight back and up. After examining ejected casings I noticed that the Kahr leaves a round firing pin indention with a slight swipe. The +P JHPs left a more pronounced indentation and swipe. I believe this is normal as I've had the same firing pin characteristics with my previous MK9. Double taps were very easy to accomplish provided you let the trigger reset completely. A definite reminder that this is a DA type trigger and not a SA.

Accuracy at 7 yards was 1 AOL. That's right..not MOA but AOL. See pic below. :D

After disassembling the weapon this evening I found no prolems. No slide peening and no enlarging of the slide stop hole. All wear patterns were exactly where you would expect. If anything the trigger is a bit smoother.

So needless to say I'm adding this one to my carry rotation! :D

Good Shooting

Same here, Red...

No problems at all. Only I used all 124gr Federal non +P Hydra-Shok JHP's to break in my PM9. Mine is all black. I came very close to buying the one with the silver slide. Nice looking. I'm still not sure that I made the right decision. The all silver looks mighty nice. Right now, mine is in a Galco belt holster. How do you plan on carrying yours? If pocket carry is on your mind, which holster are you going to use?

Nice report. I have a MK9 that I've fired with every kind of 9x19 that I could find, from sintered to HPs to ball, from low vel to +P, everything. Even during the first 200 rounds, not a bobble or hiccup. It's a very, very solid performer, and accurate as well.

Great report. Once you add it to the rotation, it will become one of your favorites I bet.

Mine gets carried IWB, Smartcarry and in my pocket.

Kentucky...

Right now I'm just using a holster designed for the G26/27. I picked this holster up several years ago from a holster maker at the Tulsa, Ok gunshow. I wished the guy would have stamped his name on the holster. I would definitely order one from him for the PM9.

I'm thinking of checking with RJ Hedley for a pocket holster. I ordered one of his for a P32 some time back. Excellent quality. I just have to make sure he cuts it short to fit in a blue jean pocket.

Oh..and I can't resist. Another pic from today's range session! :D I almost got a blackened slide like yours but then decided that the matte stainless would wear a bit better for frequent carry.

I have a kydex F.I.S.T. pocket holster which works great.
I use the slide release to feed rounds and have never had any problems, and if I remember correctly, is what the owner's manual recommends.

Red..

I also wondered if the "black" would start to wear off. However, I also thought that I don't really care about that. Almost every one of my guns gets carried and shot. Scratches & wear marks just happen. "Wear scratches" don't bother me a bit. ~I was HIGHLY bothered~ by the "idiot scratch" I put on the side of my Marlin 1894 though.<shrug>

Re: RJ Hedley--He's taking a little break right now, but I believe he'll be back. An artist like RJ can't just stop!
I wish you were here right now so you could see my "Hedleys". My favorite is the "Front Pocket LE" he made for my Seecamp. Every time I take it out, I stop to admire the downright beauty of the thing. The holster is not only a perfect fit for my Seecamp, it's also a perfect fit for the curve of my leg. RJ (rightfully) takes pride in his "customer service". He'll answer e-mails IMMEDIATELY.

Hey Red, I've got another friend in Oregon who makes great holsters too. If RJ isn't back soon, send me an e-mail and I'll give you more details. He's also an artist with leather. A little bit of "him" goes into each holster he makes. It's an amazing thing, really.
He made me a Ostrich skin belt holster for my 642 that has to be seen to be believed. When I unpacked it, my jaw dropped and I just stared. My wife said, "What's wrong with you"? I reached into the box to pick up the holster so I could show it to her and under my holster was another one. Same beautiful Ostrich skin, but for my wife's P22. Neither of us spoke for a few minutes. The beauty was overwhelming.
(I'm not kidding.)

Your apparently right...........an artist like RJ can't just stop.
He made a pocket holster and matching mag pouch for my PM9 last week.
I saw were he was trying to sell one of his NAA .32's (customized nicely
and includes front and back pocket holsters) on a forum..........noticed his
email address.........shot him a note...........and a week later I had the goods.
I says he hasn't stopped..............he just shut down the website to "slow things down a bit".
By the way, this was my first Hedley and it won't be my last. Excellent workmanship.

Rafter's Gunleather makes a holster that looks similar to yours:
http://www.raftersgunleather.com/holster.htm

My PM9 seems to really like the Gold Dot +P ammo.
I've got almost 900 rounds through it so far.
(Edited to add: 900 rounds total, mostly Winchester White box, which the gun eats like candy. Probably 50 rounds of the +P stuff.)
Only two jams of any kind, early on.
One of those was because I hadn't fully seated the mag.
Gotta love the trigger, the accuracy, and the workmanship.
I think you will be pleased with yours.

I will probably get a leather pocket holster for mine at some point, but it carries just fine in a Uncle Mike's #2 (I think) pocket holster.
Also carries really well in Don Hume and DeSantis IWB holsters.

Nice range report, Redlg155! I bought one of these pocket monsters a few months back to replace an MK40 for pocket carry. They have both been nice pistols but also both required a couple hundred rounds to become totally reliable. Not that they were horribly unreliable, just a ftf here and there but now they work great.

I've been using the 124 +P Gold Dots, that you were shooting, for carry ammo and since they were the relatively inexpensive reclassified cartridges, I use them a lot for practice too. Like you I find that I don't normally go more than 200 rounds in a session in this gun.

A great product to make it more comfortable to shoot is the Agrip by Brooks Tactical. It is kinda like an ultrasuede material that is cut to size with adhesive on one side.

The holsters I use for it are the Nemesis pocket holster by DeSantis and the Talon Plus IWB by Alessi.

Brass Balls...

I have a box of those reclassified Gold Dot +P's that I tried in my PM9. A guy at the shop told me that's ALL he shoots from his PM9. In terms of recoil, I couldn't tell any difference in recoil in the +P Gold Dots & the non +P Federal Hydra-Shoks. (Odd, eh?) Seemed like a slightly different report though. Have you fired any non +P's? Do you feel a difference? From a revolver, when you go to +P you feel an immediate difference in recoil. (Or, at least I do.)

great report.
I have a Kydex Fist holster belt clip and a Pocket holster that I ordered off of Kahrs web site.

Have about 300 rounds of ball and 50 rounds of hp's with 0 malfunctions.
Well except for me accidently pressing the magazine release while I was shooting. I have done this a couple of time now with this gun.

Thanks for the report and pics.
My PM9 had a similar problem with rounds not quite fully chambering in the first 100 rounds, but has been perfect since then (I have between 600 and 700 rounds through mine now).

It seems to like Gold Dots (+p and regular). It's very accurate and fun to shoot, but the grip checkering does get a bit rough after 150 rounds or so.

PM9s are great little guns. :D

Hey Kentucky I can't tell any difference at all between the reclassified Gold Dots and the 20 round per box stuff. I can feel a difference between the +P and the Winchester white value box stuff though. I find the recoil to be manageable but as I mentioned I don't plow through the rounds with this gun. Usually just shoot a hundred rounds a month to keep the operation fresh.

If I could change one thing on this gun it would be to shorten the reset after the first shot. Moving from Glocks and 1911s with their short resets to the Kahr I sometimes have a problem releasing the trigger fully for follow up shots.

I have the Black Diamond carried in DeSantis Nemesis, front right pocket.
I really like the all black look.
Very similar range results as reported above.
I'm now a happy camper.

Brass & Gbelleh...

Brass: Strange eh? The Non +P, 9MM Federal Hydra-Shoks and the reclassified +P, 9MM Gold Dots feel the same in terms of recoil.<shrug>

Gbelleh: I didn't even know that Gold Dots came in a Non +P loading. A guy at a gunshop told me that "there are no non +P, 9MM Gold Dots".<shrug again>

Will

Are the Hydra Shoks 124 grain? I can see if they are the 147 grain where they'd feel pretty similar.

Either way the Agrip is a great, inexpensive modification to the PM9. It'll keep the back strap waffling from digging in to the web of your hand.

Brass...

The regular 9MM Hydra-Shoks are 124gr. However, the Personal Defense Hydra-Shoks are 135gr. I didn't see anything heavier on the shelf in hollow points than the Federal PD 135's.

Really like my PM9.
Not one problem with it.
And with GD +P the mini Glock is out of there!

Now it is between the PM9 and the M642.Rather shoot the PM9!
:p

Kentucky Rifle,
I'm looking at a Speer Gold Dot cartridge right now, stamped: SPEER 9mm LUGER. I also have some stamped: SPEER 9mm LUGER +P. Both work equally well in my PM9. I usually load it with the +Ps if it's on defensive duty.

PM-9

My PM-9 has been completely reliable with over 20 different brands of ammo. I carry it in a FIST Kydex IWB/clip holster. I found that if you
push up on the mag bottom while you rack the slide, that top round
will just slip right in the chamber.

Gbelleh...

I found (and bought) some 124gr Gold Dots in both +P and Non +P. I can't tell any difference in recoil in them either though. I like Gold Dots, but the Federal PD 135gr might be the ones I choose for carry. I think I said (in another post) that I've fired a lot of Federal PD 135gr in .40 caliber from my Glock 27 and it was very accurate. Naturally, it's quite a bit fatter than the 135gr 9MM.

Pistolwhipped: My PM9 is all black too. Nice. :)

Guys, the PM9 is far easier to carry in a pocket or on my hip than my Glock. If it's as durable, then I'll be the happy camper.:D (First time I've ever said that.)

Will

I know this isnt' the right forum...but if anyone wants to trade a factory 6rd magazine for a factory 7rd mag, shoot me a PM or Email.

I never really use the 7rd mag and prefer the concealability of the 6rd.

On another note, Hurry Christmas Hurry!

The day after I'll be able to order my Chronograph!:D

Right now I'm collecting as many different JHPs as possible in order for a test report.

So far I've got the following guns lined up for tests.

14.5" 9mm AR
Smith & Wesoon 659
Keltec P11
Kahr PM9

and possibly a Beretta 92.

I'll post the velocity variations and actually see how much velocity loss I get. I know, sure I can get figures from another site, but I prefer to do my own testing.

Good Shooting
Red

Redlg155,
I (and others I'm sure) will be eagerly awaiting your chronograph results, especially for the PM9. It will be interesting to see your results for the same ammo through the different barrel lengths.

It's always good to see someone else's real world results.
