Well..Lets see,
Before...
And After...
Today I took her out for her initial shooting and break in. Through her went 200 rounds of Winchester White Box and 12 rounds of Speer 124gr Gold Dot +P JHPs. Pretty much a plain jane break in with the cheapest ammo I could find and a few extra JHPs thrown in. Hopefully in the next week I'll have a detailed range report with several loads and chronographed velocities. As you will see very soon even the accuracy reports aren't very technical in nature.
Firing Impressions and Reliability
Recoil was very manageable with standard 115grain FMJ as well as the +P JHPs. Nothing uncontrollable but things definitely got interesting after the 150 round mark. Enough that I had to take a slight break. She has just enough bite (actually more like a tiny shove) to make extensive shooting a bit uncomfortable without a shooting glove, but not enough to cause any discomfort. The slim grip just doesn't distribute the recoil energy as much as say, a Glock 26. After a soda I was good to go for the last 50 rounds. In contrast, I'd doubt the average user could get past 50 rounds of .38 special +P in an Airweight snubby as comfortably as 150 rounds though the PM9. Both weapons are approximately the same weight and it would seem the power levels slightly favor the Kahr. The biggest pain was loading the magazines! They tend to have slightly sharp feeling feed lips and are a bit tight brand new.
The PM9 did have a slight tendency to have a round hang up a bit while manually chambering the first round if you did not start from a locked slide or make sure it was completely back before releasing. A slight tap would send the round up the feed ramp. This gradually went away with repeated FMJ chamberings and only happens periodically with the JHPs.This also only happens with a full magazine. There are no problems if you only have five in the 6rd mag or 6 in the 7rd mag. I believe this small problem will be easily cured with a bit of feed ramp polishing and letting the mags start to break in.
Ejection was very positive and most empty casings would land in the same area to the right rear. I fired strong handed and weak with no malfunctions. While firing one handed on my weak side (left) the recoil tended to go up and to the right. When firing the normal strong side two handed hold the pistol recoiled straight back and up. After examining ejected casings I noticed that the Kahr leaves a round firing pin indention with a slight swipe. The +P JHPs left a more pronounced indentation and swipe. I believe this is normal as I've had the same firing pin characteristics with my previous MK9. Double taps were very easy to accomplish provided you let the trigger reset completely. A definite reminder that this is a DA type trigger and not a SA.
Accuracy at 7 yards was 1 AOL. That's right..not MOA but AOL. See pic below.
After disassembling the weapon this evening I found no prolems. No slide peening and no enlarging of the slide stop hole. All wear patterns were exactly where you would expect. If anything the trigger is a bit smoother.
So needless to say I'm adding this one to my carry rotation!
